Got a spark! Finally got back there to have a look with someone to turn the key for me. It is sparking. I guess they don't show up on video recordings in sunlight!

Fuel flow looked rubbish, so will add in an electric pump to see if this resolves that.

Multisi has saved the day and found me some of the missing coolant pipes. Hopefully will get back there Friday afternoon or Sunday to see if can get it running!

Got it running (of sorts) today.

Swapped the fuel pump shaft for the one of my old engine. That inside bolt is a bugger eh! Chucked a bit of fuel down the carb, capped off one of the vacuums and voila! Didn't tick over though, which is unsurprising as non of the carb eletrics and vacuums are on. However, when i went to start it again it was backfiring up the carb and out the exhaust. I checked the timing by getting it to TDC and looking at where rotary arm was pointing. it was just off Cylinder#1. @Itchyfeet I slackened off the 10mm bolt at the base of the distributor but, that only allowed the dizzy to spin not the rotar?

Any how, I threw it back together and tried again and still only backfiring. When i was turning the engine over by hand, I could swear that the rotar wasnt spinning. I possibly did about a full turn of the engine looking at this hoping to see it move but it didnt. So I flicked the starter switch (the remote one! ) and it spun around and happily moved when I tried by hand again?

I have a video of me trying to start it. Just not sure how to get it from my phone to here...

Any suggestions on what would cause the backfiring?

Backfiring will be your timing. Too much fuel in the chambers. Have you got a timing gun?

I haven't no. May be able to source one.
Do timing guns work on whilst cranking the engine over?

Here's the engine running / not starting. I uploaded a video to the 80-90 facebook page. I hope it's viewable. https://www.facebook.com/groups/6736795 ... 622890779/

Forgot to update this!

Switch the dizzy over, that solved the intermittent problem. Was still backfiring all over the shop, had the bloody dizzy 180 deg out!

Haven't sorted the carb electrics yet, but been manic busy and I'm away next week so tackle it when back!
