Digital Clock (dashboard)

Ok, a bit of advice please.....

My digital clock (time) in my 1987 Club Joker 1.6TD (JX) is broken.
It has been replaced (by a previous owner) with a little digital clock that fits the place - now not working also.

Looking to replace with something suitable?
Has anyone done this or found a suitable replacement for this void area on the dash/steering wheel area?

The light bulb still works fine behind the housing so during hours of darkness when the lights are switched on I would prefer a clock that can be illuminated by this and therefore read in the dark?

I have had a look at that thread

How did connect up the wiring? was it straight forward?
Im not sure how to do this or what wiring is already behind the clock housing?
Is your clock illuminated all the time or when ignition is on, or only when lights are on?

what is the power consumption is it ok to wire up without fear of leaving during non-use and draining battery?

There are three wires to connect, ground, permanent 12v and 12v for the illumination. I soldered the first two to the original clock connector on the flexible PCB and the illumination one to the pad on the PCB that the original light was using. A meter is useful to check things through and you need a light touch with the soldering as it is easy to melt the PCB.
I fitted a 10k resistor in series with the illumination supply as it was a bit bright.
The clock is on all the time but only illuminated when the dash lights are on, doesn't flatten the battery any more than the original one.
