Wasser boxer. Hydraulic tappets?
If so how are they adjusted?

I'm pretty sure they are hydraulic & you can't adjust them as such. They fill up with oil to take up the "slack" in the valvetrain. It's when they stick (usual failure mode) that you get the tapping noise. I don't know whether there's a baseline setting from which the hydraulics start that might be adjustable. Sometimes they can be made to un-stick by using engine oil flush before an oil change.

Also....when was the last time you changed the oil and filter, that can make a difference as well......and use decent oil, I use Quantum in mine since its rebuild.
