fitting water tank for fresh water

Post by wolfbus.uk »

I've got a front bulkhead on my camper and thinking of getting a metal water tank made up to fit bolted onto front bulkhead in the little recess that stretches across entire width of van on the living side. I notice that nearly all water tanks are made of plastic, should I be worried about having one made out of stainless steel? Will have baffles inside and made professionally by this chap.

The reason for using a bespoke SS tank is that it needs to sit upright and can only be 90mm wide and it seems plastic tanks are always designed wider than this.
I asked Barratt tanks to make one and the narrowest he said he could make in plastic is 120mm

Any thoughts on the matter most welcome! :ok

3 1/2 inches wide? Any point having a tank that small?
Look at Vetus flexible tanks. Or use an underslung one?

Not sure if those flexible tanks are permanent enough to rig up with pump and boiler etc?

I just did a measure up. To fit snug the tank can be 95mm x 1450 x 320mm (+ 130mm if it tapers in) giving about 38L of fresh water and being inside the living area of vehicle will remain unfrozen which with the Finland Russia trip ahead is crucial to me to have pump, boiler and tank in the camper area.

For the life of me I can't find another place to put a plumbed in tank except at the back where people have their Westfalia cupboards but I don't want to rig a load of plumbing up there as the sink and shower is gonna be by the front bulkhead/side loading door.

They are designed as permanent tanks - the beauty of them is that they will fit anywhere. They take rough treatment, my boat one was always being used as a step when full. You aren't envisaging using the tank for hot water are you? I don't understand what problem there could be with a pump (that is the normal method of drawing the water) or where a boiler comes into it, surely you are only going to heat water that is drawn from the tank?

What could possibly go wrong with a tank full of boiling water above the driving seat? In a major crash any fires will be extinguished, might be a bit of scalding though

thanks for your time Oldie I dint realise they could be used permanently sounds promising. The link showing full width unit sat up against any proposed tank hopefully shows that once installed access will be very restricted. So if I got a 100 litre flexible tank and stuffed it into the gap, it would in theory become a 1400 x 320 x 95mm tank of cold water that would feed my pump etc.. and yes cold the only stored hot water will be in elgena boiler

and a link to drawing
