I bought a new petrol pump from 'The Bishop' last weekend. I put the pump in the van as a spare on Wednesday and set off camping for a couple of days. I arrived at the campsite and got out my levelling chocks. Just then the engine cut out. I called my breakdown service.
In the meantime I took off one of the spark plug leads and attached it to a spare plug. I rested it on the engine and got a passer-by to crank the engine. I had a spark. So the breakdown guy focussed on petrol flow. Turned out that the old pump had packed up. As I had the spare pump with me, he fitted it. He then took off the air intake to the carb and primed the carb with petrol while I cranked the engine to get fuel flowing through the pump. The engine is now purring again.

I had the opposite. In my locker I had an accelerator cable and I thought I had a packed spare light switch. In the event both failed on the same trip, I had forgotten the switch and the accelerator cable was wrong!

The last time I called out the AA, the patrolman said he liked being called to 'these old vehicles', because most owners carry a box of spares, and he can usually sort the problem with the parts.

You're right about it.

Had to take a double take on this post as thought we were under lockdown, then noticed the date of the original post, happy days ahead hopefully.
