which pipe goes to the top of the radiator

I hope this is in the right place, I am having a problem overheating,1981 diesel 1.6
does the top pipe from the engine go to the top or the bottom of the radiator?
one of the pipes from the engine ( inch and a half) that is going to the radiator goes down and then comes back up, like the letter U, I do not think it should, am I correct that there should be no drop in the pipe?
any help would be most greatfull, thank you

There are two long steel or hard plastic pipes that go to and from the radiator
There are two flexible pipes that go to and from the heater matrix.

The pipe from the back of the head goes to the heater matrix

if your talking about the radiator pipes - have they been replaced by runs of flexi hose? Can't see how else they could droop?

It has bits of old Hoover pipe ,I think one is to long it is above the engine and then it drops down to 5 inch off the road then comes back up to the radiator in a U

I drove the bus up from Manchester to south shields it was a cold and rainy day, I pottered up at 45-50 all the way, the air vents were open and I only had cold air all the way home,
I changed the thermostat as the old one was stuck closed, since then I have had the engine out to do a rebuild, and I just wanted to make sure that I had not crossed any pipes
And now the matrix and rad are not getting any warm water to them at all,
