Hi all,
A quick question does anyone know a decent garage/mechanic within the north west of England who can replace my tired and powerless non turbo 1.6 diesel with something more suitable. I'm not looking for rocket just improved torque and cruising speed. I have read several of the previous forums regarding sourcing various engine codes etc. but this is not a job I wish to take on myself I just want a reliable mechanic to tell me that for £??? He/she will give me my buyback with a better donkey in the back. I have already bought a mk4 golf gt tdi on the advise of one local garage to be told by another that it is a very complicated and expensive fix and that it won't work. Any advise or offers would be very much appreciated.

Your best bet is the 1Y 1.9 non-turbo (or naturally aspirated, as us engine nerds call it), often found in Polos, Golfs, Skodas and the odd Caddy van. Lovely cheap and simple swap that will transform your driveability.

Yes, exactly that. Here's a link to the one in classifieds from our friend Mr Hutch:

It's a very straightforward job that most independent garages should be able to handle. We could do it for you if you preferred, but not til October/November.
