Adjusting lifter clearance?

Hi I have just bought a 1980 t25 air cooled engine it's a 2L with webber carb converson, it had a new engine fitted and was told after 500mile I was to adjust the lifter just looking for some info on this like what the clearance is do I do this when engine is cool or hot or any other pionters

Your CU engine had hydraulic lifters factory fitted.
It has no clearances to adjust

If it has changed to solid lifters you need to find out if this has been done correctly

After reading this I'm so confused I have the paper work in the house for new engine or full rebuild it say at bottom of the it you must adjust lifters after 500mile or my warranty will be void weird I will take picture of it tonight and post it as could be miss reading it lol

Is there a sticker on the engine with a drawing of the valve train?
Who did the engine recon?

the only way to tell is ask the engine builder.
If they are solid.
Ask if the cam shaft has been changed and the pushrods to accommodate the solid lifters.
If all that is ok then 6 thou is the gap.

the paper work that said the adjustment of tappets after 500 mile was done in 2014 and had 130k on clock but also in that paper work it had a full list of part replaced and one of them was replaced hydraulic tappets lol.

Then paper work for 2015 for full engine rebuild at 131k so only done a thousand miles after all that other work before rebuild? This dose not say anything about tappets the only thing it said was (ensure engine airflow metalwork is renewed or allowing correct circulation or engine warranty work will be invalid)

The code on engine is : CU008291

Also as I'm new to the game engine airflow metalworks??

The second invoice suggests that the cam followers* were replaced again
So they were changed twice in two years?
Most odd.
If the followers were replaced like for like in 2015 then your engine has hydraulic lifters.
Firstly I would be finding out I this is the case.
Secondly if the lifters are hydraulic, and set correctly, then no adjustment is necessary.


Air flow metal work is commonly called "tinware"
It has to be all in place or the engine will get too hot

Just called the garage that done the rebuild and they told me that they fitted solid lifters not hydraulic so how easy it it the adjustment them and after they are adjusted do I need to do this yearly? And can't mind if you said do the adjustment when engine is cold or hot?

Did you ask them if they fitted the correct solid lifter camshaft and pushrods for solid lifters?
Compared to a sold lifter camshaft, the base circle of the hydraulic cam has been reduced to allow the extra time required to fully pressurize the hydraulic lifter.

They are different and it does matter. :ok

No I did not ask that I don't know much about these engines I'm a newbie to it all surly they would have???

Just called them back and spoke to the guy that done the engine and he say that all the pushrods and camshafts fitted are for sold lifters so all good thanks for all your help

So back to your original question

On a stock engine they should be checked regularly and set to the factory settings every 3000 miles for optimum performance
it must only ever be done with the engine stone cold
remember to turn the engine 180-degrees anti-clockwise between each cylinder.
According to VW, Post-1971 engines clearances should be set to 0.006-inch.

Do you need a guide to the procedure?
