Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Hello all,
When my 1986 T25 1.9 petrol camper goes over 50mph it sometimes starts to pull, as tho the brakes are being tapped. Going up and down on the accelerator can sort this out but only temporarily. In addition it's more prone to happen when going up hill it seems.
So, I have 2 fuel filters one just before the carb and one just after the fuel tank. I have just looked at the one after the fuel tank and it's much larger than the normal type. Do you think this could be the problem? It's been on about a year.
Here's a pic:

That should not be hanging down, I'd replace it and tie it up, you should remove the filter from engine bay it's a fire hazard if if were to melt.

I't's being starved of fuel.
either the filter is blocked
or the pump can't deliver.
sort the filter out first, get rid of the engine bay one

Also check the vacuum pipe on the carb. A crack or pin hole could upset the advance.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Hello, thanks for the advice.
That's sound logic about the filter potentially melting, I never thought of it, it doors get mighty hot in there. I'll take it out. Would it be okay to join the hoses with a plastic piece?
I'll replace the filter under the van also, I don't have any fuel line clamps. Could I clamp the pipe shut with mole grips? Obviously making sure not to damage the pipe.
I'll check the vacuum hose also, although the advance was disconnected years ago as it was messing everything up. I'll still have a general look tho.
Thanks again for your tips and advice.

Mole grips should be fine, but check fuel flows well from the tank while you are changing the filter, you could have a blockage at the tank outlet due to crud in the tank - this can be worse on a hill because it moves about in the tank.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Yep, classic fuel starvation symptoms, filters, pump, cone filter in carb inlet pipe etc, one of them is very likely to blame.

That needs fixing, you are wasting fuel and losing performance.cubensis wrote:the advance was disconnected years ago as it was messing everything up.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Aye. Replace the advance mechanism. Not only will it never run right without it, your engine will suffer. Replace the length of fuel hose where the engine bay filter is. Joining it will just introduce the potential of a leak and/or engine fire. Make sure the small cone filter in the carb fuel inlet pipe isn't clogged up.

It never ceases to amaze me when little nuggets of vital information appears.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Great info, thanks, I'll let you know how it goes.
This had made me decide to replace all the fuel line in the van, should 3 meters be enough?

maybe but you could get carried away fixing stuff thats not broken and forget that there is anotyer problem to fix.
I'd just replace the bit in the engine bay for now to remove the unwanted filter.

Re: Fuel filter causing van to pull?
Takes less than an hour to replace the whole lot. For me that's well worth it given the peace of mind etc.
