Self build kitchen units

Post by Donwhscc »

Just looking at doing a small kitchen unit and wondered if anyone had used the lightweight mdf I have seen? I know its probably best to use the proper lightweight ply but thats quite expensive so looking at alternatives but need to keep the weight down. Current unit was made in chipboard.

Even lightweight mdf is heavy and like all mdf it does not like moisture, it does not take screws very well.
Try looking for some spruce based plywood very light albeit a bit soft.

I've seen interiors constructed using moisture resistant MDF and then painted. They look great when done right.

What is preferred construction technique? Frame and thin lightweight ply cladding, or using a heavy ply to create a ply box type? Does that make sense?

I made mine in 6mm birch ply with no frame but made base and shelves fitted then bonded together very light and increadable strong.
Were gas bottles go inside painted with resin to form a sealed unit.

I made mine with normal PAR reds from Savoy Timber (whatever that is) not very light but cheap and strong. I've cut loads of holes in it to make it lighter then routered the edges of the holes to neaten them up. Looks ace and not noticed any drop in performance from the van. Jon.
