1.9 dg problem!!!
Hi there!
I'm having some issues with my wagon...
It has a pierburg 2e carb.
She's been running lovely intermittently
Perfect for say 100 miles then
Splutters and won't idle.. she runs but you have to keep the revs up.. I've changed dizzy cap, rotor cleaned the top of the carb.. also checked both filters..
Any advice where to go next?
Many thanks!

Re: 1.9 dg problem!!!
The symptoms you describe make me think that you have something loose. I'd check your fuel connections (can you smell fuel around the rear of the van?). Check all the pneumatic lines going to and from the carb. Check HT leads, coil connections, hall sensor plug on the dizzy.
I'd replace the fuel filter (they're only a couple of quid). My focus would be on the fuel / induction system rather than the ignition system.

Yeah I've got an online filter to change over as it seemed a bit cruddy..
I've been focusing on fuelling too. As it's all new leads cap etc..
Vac pipes seem ok..
It ran better the first time this happened after placing my hand over the carb.. which led me to fuel issue. As it starts but seems to be starved.
Cheers for the reply dude! I'll post some pics of the things I'm unsure of tomorrow as every day is a school day!

Does it stall when approaching junctions intermittently, almost as if it just dies, but otherwise runs fine and starts again straight away when cranked over after stalling?
I had similar issues with mine, whereby I had to intermittently keep my foot on the throttle to keep the revs up when I approached a junction to prevent it stalling.
One minute it ran perfect, then all of a sudden it would do this for a given period before running perfect again.

The pump seems fine.. that was my first port of call.. it seems to Splurt plenty of fuel.. I have a replacement to try also so will try that..
It runs as smoothly as anything.. responsive etc but then every so often kangaroos and revs all lumpy?

Re: 1.9 dg problem!!!
But yeah she will die at junctions when this problem is occurring..
Re: 1.9 dg problem!!!
Well, I wouldn't rule out other's suggestions on here, they have far more experience than me with these vans - having said that, I sent mine into the garage to sort out.
It came back OK, with the comments that it was running too lean.
This seemed odd to me, as it would be OK sometimes.
Nevertheless, the issue hasn't resurfaced having the fuel mixture altered, although it has been suggested on here that it could have been air getting into the system.
More air meant it was running lean.
So, with that in mind, it could be that the garage has just `masked` my problem, by increasing fuel mixture.
If the air issue gets worse, my problems will return, and then I will know it's an air leak issue.
I was advised to spray WD40 ( IIRC ) around the carb when i experience this issue next - to see if the revs pick up - but it hasn't happened since. ( I fully expect it to though, the advice given on here by others has been correct so far.! )
Wait and see what others think on here, I don't want to send you on a wild goose chase...!!

Re: 1.9 dg problem!!!
I used to get a backfire on the overrun a few years ago so replaced the dodgy vacuum pipes and all was well.
Earlier this year the problem started again and put it down to a loose stud on the exhaust manifold/generally decrepit system so got around to replacing that and again it was sorted.
Until last weekend when the backfiring [overrun] started again and it felt slightly underpowered and started to cut out at junctions. Checked all vacuum pipes etc and replaced the one not done before from the pulldown unit.
Using carb cleaner to check for leaks around the carb/inlet manifold I noticed a definite pick up of the revs when it was sprayed around the front of the right hand side inlet manifold gasket. It's not that noticeable unless you give the accelerator a push then the revs pick up and runs really smoothly.
Gaskets ordered from Brickwerks and going to get them changed on Monday.

Mine did the same, it was a dodgy vac pipe

Ooh, I've never thought to spray around the manifold/head gaskets. I'll give that a go too.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

Well today I stripped and cleaned the carb fitted my new filter and BOOOOOOOMMM she lives! Let's see how she goes
thanks for all your replies guys. You're the best.
Even though this was my first post :/
You didn't mind helping.
For this im grateful.
My name is ross and I'm sure there will be many 'what's this?' Posts in the future haha

Re: 1.9 dg problem!!!
Still worth spraying around gaskets and ends of throttle shaft. If speed increases, you have a leak which will cause it to lean out at idle. Also clean out hidden cone filter tucked inside fuel inlet pipe on carb. They do get crudded up although that tends to affect fuel delivery at wide throttle openings. Any leak anywhere around carb including hoses, will cause it to stall when slowing down or at idle. A totally clogged air filter will also result in a lack of idle speed.

A positive outcome is always a bonus. Nw hen you say 'stripped the carb' how much did you dismantle?
