Hi,
I just bought a 1982 2l air cooled T25 and has really sloppy gear changes (sorry I know there's loads of threads on this, but I think I'm missing something). I have to push down and left (as if going into reverse) to find 2nd gear. There's some wear on the shift rod bolt, so i'll replace that as well as the linkage bushes. Should that do the trick, or is there still a piece missing?
I've put some pics online if you follow the link below, to show you what I pulled out from the gearshift housing. Would really appreciate an some advice on what to do.
Cheers!

Re: Gearshift and linkage problems
It looks like there's some metal on metal rubbing, so maybe its a packer or insulator of some sort?
I can't find any bits online, but if it is just a piece of rubber/plastic I might be able to make something. Any suggestions?

Is your van 5 sp dos that's a 4 speed housing. I have same issue but have to depress gear lever to engage first. 5 speed housings are like hens teeth.

Re: Gearshift and linkage problems
It's a 4 speed gearbox. I managed to sort it, it was the little round bush that goes around the selector bolt at the back of the linkage. It had just worn so there was too much play around the bolt. I just replaced it and greased it up nicely and it seemed to do the trick!

I am having the same issues with mine and am planning an overhaul front to back. Has anyone fitted a short shift modification? Any opinions as to wether or not it is worth it?

I have on my 5 speed and yes I think it's definitely worth it. The travel is much easier and the shifts more direct, as the effect of any play is also reduced.
You have to give it more welly to get past the detent for first gear etc as leverage is reduced of course, but it's not so much that it's a negative.

Brilliant, thanks for that grease monkey. May as well get it all sorted at the same time.
