Aircooled Engine Misfire and Oil Consumption. Engine Rebuild

Post by mitchell72 »

Does anybody know of a good Aircooled engine rebuilder in the Grantham / Lincolnshire area. I have a 1982 2.0 CU Aircooled Viking/Explorer which has unfortunately broken down whilst in France. The engine lost power and started misfiring and burning a lot of oil. It made it to our campsite but by that point it was only running on three cylinders. Having European AA cover I had a 'very nice man' come and take a look. He diagnosed no compression on one of the cylinders and low on another. Both on the right side of the engine as you look at it from the back. Therefore the van is still in France awaiting transportation back to the UK.
I really want to get this van back up and running and capable of making these kinds of journeys again. Does anybody have any recommendations of a good mechanic who could take out asses and possibly rebuild my engine without ripping me off!

Do you have any space where you could give it a go yourself? Could work out a lot cheaper saving money on the labour, and its good to learn about your engine too. I have a 2ltr CU in mine and that's my job planned for the winter, pull the engine apart and give it a rebuild I think its a pretty simple engine to play with and always plenty of good advice and help given here on the club

Yes, many folk on here swear by them (not at them ;)) :ok

They are one of the best VW flat 4 engineers around, and right on your doorstep it seems. When I need summat doing that I don't want to do (or can't do) I think nothing of driving the 80+ miles for Andrew and his team to do it. (In fact waiting for a reply from an email just sent re a broken exhaust stud right now). They are always pretty well booked up though (as good places usually are ;))
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

Thanks. I have dropped them a line to see what kind of money we are talking to drop the engine out and take a look. It may prove a little expensive to have it rebuilt by them so I may give it a go myself. Always up for a challenge. I just lack the time at the moment so it may be off the road for a while.
