T25 1980 1600 CT Carburettors

Post by Wobba »

Hi guys

Currently have a Solex PICT 4 carb on the van but it either needs a good service or replacing. I've looked all over the place for options and found some kits but they do not specify if they will fit or not, and no reply from suppliers.

Is there a tried and tested optional kit or carb that will bolt straight on that any of you know about?

Cheers!

Wobba.

FYI:

Just fitted a twin Weber ICT 34 setup for a Type 3 engine from Delorto/Eurocarb. Had to modify the kit a bit. They sent me the longer throttle link bars and bigger balancing bar mounts otherwise it would have fouled the oil cooler on this Type 1 engine. Had to modify them as they would have hit the sides of the pancake air filters:

The reason I suggested this route to the owner is that the 1600CC on the T25 is a pile of "pooh" as standard, plus the old Solex carb was a mess...leaking fuel and loads of grit inside from years of use...plus the bodge jobs at rebuilding it were...crap...to put it politely.

I got the kit yesterday and it is all fitted now, apart from the throttle cable, which I am waiting for parts on.

This kit effectively deletes various pipes and the airbox, and the large central manifold. I plugged the pre-heat pipe with the caps you can get. I explained to the owner it may mean less consistent starting in the cold, but he never uses it outside of summertime anyway :)

Also, the fuel return is now redundant:

That silver thing is a better looking and more durable one way valve I fitted before the carb upgrade.

Note, I blocked the vacuum retard on the dizzy...I've read many posts from people all over the Interweb asking about this....

I still use the advance, it goes to the left carb, and the right carbs vacuum point is also blocked off now. The 1600 CT came with NON- servo brakes, so unless I fit a servo assisted master cylinder, I don't need it.

I had to tap two holes on the carb for the balance bar mounts:

Easy stuff:

My phone was low on power and it was getting darker outside, but here it is at the moment:

Sounds way better than before, with excellent throttle response...like my ITB's on my Clio Williams track car, they work in a similar way.

I hope this is useful to someone, somewhere :)

Hi all. This is my first post on here, though I'm a regular to VW's as I have a 1972 Bay window T2.

I know this is an old post but hopefully Wobba is still listening! I've just fitted this same carb setup to my sister's 1600 CT T25. I had to mess around with linkage lengths and generally found clearance to be a bit of an issue (had to remove one section of sound proofing from the engine cover). I still need to hook up the breather properly so I was interested in where the pancake filters were sourced and if they are fitted with a breather inlet. Also does the right hand carb linkage support strut need to be cut into similar to the L/H one as it all looks quite tight from what I can see (hence why the kit is sold with those little cone shaped filters)?

Makes a ton of difference though, it actually accelerates uphill now! She's well pleased :)

Hadn't spotted that, thanks!

Anyone else heard of/had experience with fitting this kit/these carbs to a 1600 CT engine?

Thanks Sarran1995

Much appreciated but a bit late I'm afraid, it's already done! :) Actually there was little wrong with the original carb, it's just that the bus was so underpowered. I did a health check on the engine and compression was good so it was twin carbs all the way.

In my experience this is the most dramatic bolt on upgrade you can do to a Type 2 engine. They already have twin carbs on most if not all type 4's IIRC and I believe it accounts for a lot of their performance gains. You get better MPG, more torque, more power and no carb icing with twin carbs, I don't know why they didn't do it from stock. Ultimately it was an easy choice. I just haven't had to do it in a T25 with the lower engine bay clearance! :D
