Oops sorry I better make things clear...my speedo has got the slipping cogs and keeps stopping I have tried gluing the shaft and it worked for a couple years then it stopped again.also tried gluing small plastic stop on as member ghost did but won't work so I have bought one from T25 direct to change it and want the mileage to be right.

You will need to partly dismantle it to do anything, but they are quite tamper-proof. Allowing for old plastic etc means that "clocking" isnt an option, you will just break it.
I have wound the mileage forward to match on a replacement speedo using a small 1.5v motor and a pinion, but the advance was at the rate of 1 mile per second so it took a good while because it was a late one...

Just note the old and new mileage in the service record, you can't really wind it on, it;s not worth the agro and slightly dodgy even if you are making it higher!!!

If you can get the White cog off of the spline without pulling the spline out (it runs through the mileometer number cogs) then get a small set of pliers & gently ''twist' it around the area where the cog sits to make it a little 'rough' - force the cog back on and it won't come back off. You really need a set of those precision pliers for the job.

I did this to mine as it was stuck on the same mileage for about 4 years (as per the MOT's) & it's been fine ever since.

And a cordless drill with a suitable screwdriver bit would certainly not work in the speedo cable hole of the speedo to wind the clock.

There are at least two different types - I've just mucked about with the early ones with a metal frame around the odometer.

First remove the speedo needle carefully as they are brittle. When refitting there is a white mark on outside of the dial below the peg you use to line it up. Then remove the two screws holding the dial on using very thin screwdriver.
If you loosen the screws holding the metal crossbar that holds the spring for the speedo you should be able to get the long worm drive gear to unmesh from the cog on the shaft holding the odometer wheels. Writing this from memory so there may be something else to undo but if so should be obvious. With your working speedo I would not try and remove anything else as you are likely to bring on the problem you had with your original unit where the cogs on the shaft loose grip and stop turning the numbers. Now just sit there watching TV or what ever and just spin the white cog by hand. Will take a canny few hours but I managed to reset one back to zero that way.

I was going to fit that one to replace the km only one that kept slipping out of mesh. I have since refitted the km one after fixing it with superglue and roughening the shaft where the grey right hand cog sits. Took a while to fix as I the superglue leaked onto the trip cogs and needed scraping out once dry. However has been running fine last 12000km or so.

Just be very careful with that very delicate hair spring that zeros the needle. I damaged one and from that point on it's a new / used full unit required. I was trying the drill technique and whilst doing so it slipped out of my hand, damaging that spring. On my replacement one, I just carefully stripped it down enough so I could move the cogs over the pegs. Delicate and tricky, but doable.

Re the slipping white cog. Can't remember where I read it, but glue is not ideal, squash the shaft gently between the serrated bit of the jaws of a set of pliers. Start gently, trying harder pressure until you get to the point where the cog is a firm push fit back onto the shaft. You can barely see the marks left by the pliers, but it works. Not my idea, I read it on BW or maybe the Sirocco forum (same basic design of speedo).

I am going to throw a few paraphrases from different law departs regarding speedometers, you make up your own mind.... yet they all roughly say the same thing, it can be deemed an offence to alter the speedometer. Even there are some companies offering this service, most need proof of actual mileage, ownership, MOT etc... they will also add in their documentation to you, your responsibility when moving the vehicle on.

"The law on mileage discrepancies is strict. You do not have to know it is wrong. You can in fact believe it to be accurate. It is simply a question of fact. If it is wrong you have committed an offence.

If you change the recorded mileage (also known as mileage clocking) or replace the speedometer with one with a different reading then clearly the act of changing the odometer is applying a false trade description and an offence.

If you offer a vehicle for sale or even supply a vehicle which has been clocked, although not by you, nor for you, and even if you are unaware that it has been clocked, you have committed an offence."

“There are very few instances where mileage can be altered legally,” said Taylor.

“I can only think of one: when the odometer breaks. And if that happens, you’d take it to a dealership where it would be recorded and logged properly. Safeguards are in place to show everything is above board. But these companies don’t do that and there’s little or no paperwork. If mileage is altered for other reasons, criminal offences are committed.”

"The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 have replaced the Trade Descriptions Act and is a wide-ranging piece of legislation, which makes it a criminal offence for a trader to engage in a commercial practice that is misleading in respect to goods and services. The misleading element could be in the form of an actual action or description or in the omission of facts about the goods or services.

The mileage indicated by the odometer of a car is a description, and offences relating to it can include altering the odometer reading, making false claims about it, having a vehicle for sale with a false odometer reading"
