Engine rebild and upgrade question

Post by RCN »

Hi all. I replaced my old 1.9 DG about 18 months ago and kept the old engine to strip and inspect why it used so much oil (number 3 cly. worn). Anyways, I'd like to at some time scrape up some cash and put the original block back in, but go up to a 2.1L

Apart from new top end units- Heads, Pistons, rings, Barrels, do I need to replace the existing Cam or Crankshafts ( they're in good cond.) or anything else (gaskets and bearings aside)
Is it as simple as buying the above in 2.1 L and bolting them onto a 1.9L block?
Cheers

It's the other way round. To convert a 1.9 to 2.1 you'll need a new crank (longer stroke), a new cam (different timing), and new pistons (2 sorts: high compression DJ or lower compression MV), but the barrels and heads are the same.

So I am thinking of doing this as a winter project and looking at sourcing the 2.1 bits. However, looking at Euro parts and VW Heritage (looking at others too) that they offer big bore 1.9 l pistons and barrels which got me thinking should I replacing and upping to a 2.1 or simply buying the 1.9 big bore pieces, or a combination of the two. I was reading CJH's other post about how he sourced a 2.1 and had some issues with the oil cooler routing, but I'd be wanting to keep my original 1.9 block so no problem there-I think.
Just getting a little confused which way to go
