glow plug wiring and relay location

Post by Andyvandy »

Hi,

I have a 1990 1.9TD and the glow plugs don't appear to be operational - takes a very long time to start from cold.

The Haynes manual doesn't cover the diesel vans so I have no wiring diagram.

I need to know where the glow plug relay is located so I can fault find the cause

The glow plug indicator lamp never goes off until the engine actually starts - which seems in itself to indicate a fault.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

The relay is in the engine bay on the near side top of the bulkhead nearest to the front of the van in a black plastic box with a lot of wires going to it,there is a 50amp strip fuse sits below the relay probably blown but can corrode through with age.they blow sometimes if a heater plug fails.test with a suitable piece of wire VERY IMPORTANT REPLACE WITH THE CORRECT FUSE TO AVOID A FIRE :ok

Tim,

Thanks for the info.
If the fuse has gone it will be replaced with the correct one!

Thanks

Just done some checking and the fuse is fine and power is getting to the glow pugs.
I suspect the glow plugs are at fault.

The nuts on the glow plug connecting bridge are rusty and seized solid.
It looks as though the only way I am going to get them out will involve destroying the connecting bridge.

Anyone know where I can get a new bridge?

The old one looks rather ratty anyway!

Thanks

Thanks Si,

It looks as though I will have to remove the injector pump to gain access to the two front glow plugs.
Please would someone confirm that is the case?
It seems an awful lot of work just to replace the glow plugs....

Thanks

Apparently you don't need to although it's a right bar steward to do. The key is to use the bus bar to hold the awkward glow plugs while you fit them back in. That and a long reach magnet to pick up bits dropped, and hold nuts while you put them back in position.
