Is it worth seeing if it can be welded or trying a salvage breaker ?

Exhaust
I have a 1989 2.1 petrol we've owned for 8 years - the exhaust has started blowing somewhere ( can't identify exactly where but can hear it ) I have all the receipts since new so am pretty sure the exhaust system is the original one ( 26 yrs old ! ) What's the cheapest way to rectify this - a new system appears to be £700 +
Is it worth seeing if it can be welded or trying a salvage breaker ?

Re: Exhaust
Still a large wedge of money but not £700.

tail pipe is about 15 quid
total about 325
The above is all mild steel and won't last more than about 5 years or so as it's not oem vw quality, stainless as above at 460 quid is imo a better solution
if however you can find a hole in just one part and you are on a budget, just replace that one part

Re: Exhaust
what he said^^^
You've had the van 8 years already so it's obviously not just a temporary vehicle for you, so I would definitely recommend going for a stainless system as it will probably outlive the rest of the van! The speedshop system is really good value for money in my opinion.

Re: Exhaust
Thanks for links - the SS one does look the best option as we have no intention of selling the van for a few more years .

Re: Exhaust
That VW speedshop one linked to above is a bit louder than a standard one, especially when first fitted (until it carbons up a bit inside). It's not "boy racer" loud, but is certainly a bit "throatier" than a standard system. Just thought you might like to know that.tone wrote:Thanks for links - the SS one does look the best option as we have no intention of selling the van for a few more years .
