Lumpy running and stall.

Hi,

I would like to utilise your wealth of knowledge. I recently bought a T25 2.0 CU Aircooled 1981 petrol. It was leaking oil and ran slow when o drove it. It also had pants brakes.

I found a split vacuum hose t-piece which I replaced and has improved the brakes. I've changed the rockers, gaskets, clips, oil filter, strainer, oil and spark plugs. However now when I drive it it has almost no power. It starts OK (not instant) but the idle is now low. When I drive it I can't really get more than as out 35/40mph and it cuts out as soon as I stop at lights.

I stupidly forgot to set the gaps on the spark plugs - too dark now, would this cause this to happen? Other thoughts are because it was being run with a split vacuum hose it is now set up wrong? A bad connection in the idle stabiliser or idle solenoid? I haven't yet changed the rotor? Or fuel filter? Leads? Perhaps the coil but the last owner tells me it was relatively new. Or the timing but I don't have a gun to do this.

1st port of call will be to set the gaps I know but if this doesn't rectifiy then what else can I look for/at? How can I tell if I have the hated 009 dizzy on her, is it written anywhere?

Just want to be able to take her for a drive and prove to the girlfriend that she is worth the money, time and scraped knuckles.

The spark-plug gaps won't make a massive difference to the performance. No where near the lack of performance caused by a blocked fuel filter or the timing being out.
A 009 dizzie won't have a vacuum can on the side. (I ran my van with a 009 without any performance problems so despite some people's opinions a 009 dizzie isn't so bad.)
If I were you I'd borrow a strobe and check the timing after you've fitted a new fuel filter.

Thanks for that. My query is that although it was slow when I bought it, I still got to 50/60 it wasn't lumpy and never cut out. I changed the plugs and vacuum hose and it's now running awful. Basically I haven't changed the timing so would it be off now?

Anyone in Bristol got a timing gun I could borrow?

when you changed the plugs - are you sure you returned the spark plug leads to the right spark plug?

Pretty sure that I did but will check tomorrow.

But unsure as to whether I have a vacuum can on it. Will check tomorrow. Any good places for car tools that you guys know of?
