pierburg carb storage

hi everyone i have just bought a spare pierburg card for my 1.9 dg petrol engine van and was just wandering the best way way to store it to keep it in good running order,cheers dave

Personally I would gently clean the outside with a paintbrush and paraffin while keeping it upright, take care not to get any dirt inside be slow and methodical
Then fit it and see if it actually drives OK, preferably use it for a week to get a good picture, many of these carbs are pretty knackered.
If you are lucky and it drives ok I would run it dry on idle by removing the fuel pipe from filter under the van, you may need to plug the pipe from the tank if the level is high ( a suitable drill bit on the smooth part is ideal as you have a variety of diameters to choose from) then store it upright in the dry wrapped in a cloth to stop dirt getting in but allowing it to breath, don't use a plastic bag.
refit existing carb.
if you do this take care not to drop anything down the carb or manufold, I always have a rag placed in the carb or manufold when undoing each fixing.

if the carb is knackered you can choose to fix it at leisure and not wait until you desperately need it.

I spray mine all over liberally with a light oil (3 in 1) and put it in sealable plastic bag when storing, as the throttle butterflies, choke butterflies and fast idle can seize on the spindles.

just had a look at the carb and have just noticed one of the long bolts that the air filter housing bolts on to has snapped off flust to the carb what is the best way of getting this out is drilling it out an option or welding a nut on to it.or do you think there will be enough pressure to hold the housing on with the 2 remaining bolts?cheers dave

If you remeve the carb you can get to the stud to remove it
if mole grips dont do it there are other tools available,
If it all goes horribly wrong dg manufolds are around second hand for sensible money.

hi its not the one that comes from the manifold through that hold the carb on its one of the three on the carb itself that the air filter hosing bolts on to,cheers dave

Mmm not going to be easy
if you know somebody that can weld then weld an m5 nut on and try and remove it that way
if not the drill it out starting with a centre punch, then a small drill say 3mm, then move up diameters to 5.2mm
then helicoil, you can buy m5 studs of the right length on ebay

need to place tape and paper around the stud and use a vacuum cleaner to catch ALL the swarf

Be careful not to drill too dep, either remove one of the other studs and measure or i can check the depth on my spare carb if you need

works for me

Rubber gaskets disappeared many years ago, they are mainly synthetic now
As for gaskets they get oily anyway

Yeh i see the logic but just not sure its good to stop it breathing, personally i wouldn't use plastic.

I would use a 2mm left hand drill bit as this will often unscrew the stud as you drill,
