oil pump renewal

Post by lees »

Hi All
Going to replace the oil pump on the bus next week had the buzzer of doom come on so did a pressure check when replacing the oil switch turns out its way low, thought i would do the pump first before further investigation.
Any tips or hints doing this job with the engine still in would be appreciated
Cheers Lee

Apart from the access jobs which are self explanatory, slacken the the 8mm nuts that hold the crankcase together around the oil pump first before you try to remove the pump, usually best to use the correct oil pump puller.
Before installing the new pump measure the distance between the back of the pump and the camshaft rivets to make sure they don't hit the pump (not unknown if a different camshaft has been fitted at some point.

You'll need two different gaskets. One should be quite thick (about 10 thou iirc) and one should be very thin (possibly 2 thou). The thick one goes betweeen pump flange and crankcase, and the thin one between cover plate and pump body.

I only mention this because when I tried to replace an oil pump last year I could only get thick gaskets. Supplier was Brickwerks, and as far as I know they have not resolved this issue. If you use one of these thick gaskets under the cover plate, the pump will never self prime from empty, resulting in no oil presure at all, and if you do get it pumping oil, your oil pressure will still be low, due to excessive end clearance of the rotor.

Hope you have more luck than me in getting a thin gasket. In the end I used a TINY amount of silicone in place of a gasket under the cover plate.

Thanks for the replies guys, brickwerks have the 2 gaskets
I have got a nackered engine in the garage that i intend to rebuild so took the oil pump off it today fairly straight forward { on the bench } but the pump housing did not have a threaded bit for a puller for some reason, came off though with a bit of leverage. I was going to get the fitters at work to make me a puller this weekend while we are on nights but dont know the thread size needed incase the one on the van is threaded.
If anyone knows the size that would be great.
Parts should be here on Monday and i am off for a few days so will let you know how it goes fingers crossed new pump should fix it if not on with the rebuild

Here's my oil pump puller. The tee shaped bit sort of joggles into holes in the sides of the casing once the rotor has been removed.
