Roof bag/box

Post by Eloise »

Hi, does anyone know of a roof bag or box that will fit in or on the roof bars, on a komet high top. The space is roughly 90cm by 45cm the back slope of the roof starts at 45cm. Any ideas? Been searching eBay etc and all seem too big or are square in construction. I want to carry the awning and bits up there.

Cheers Neil.

Mine has a high top which I am pretty sure comes from a komet mold (look exactly the same anyway). I dont currently have the factory roof bars (though I think they are still available but thats for a different thread)and so I use use a pair of Thule high top bars mounted on the gutters.
Long story short... I've just bought one of these for exactly the same reason as you for storing awning etc:

Its based on the original Westfalia accessory bag.

Its a bit bigger than the overall dimensions of the roof but as its a soft bag I fon't think it will be a major problem. I'll take some pics of it fitted (should arrive tomorrow) unless you are in a rush.

Thanks for that. If only it was ten centimetres less on the length or width, it would fit inside the standard roof bars.

How are you going to fit it on the bars? Just sandwich between them, rest it on the roof and strap to them?

The standard roof bars are ok but are only on three sides and are quite a bit inboard of the roof edges.

I have seen some square ones that are a bit smaller, but it am tempted by one of those to lay across the bars and strap it to them. Some pics of it would be great

Currently just has a the poles and canvas to our awning (royal traveller) which are ultimately dictating the overall width.

The bag itself is fairly robust but has no loops to secure the straps so currently they just wrap around the bag and the cross bars. The bag sits down nicely between them and is actually a little more compact than I imagined. I think I will fix some of these loops to the cross bars so the straps themselves dont slide around:

Hi, that looks a good solution. I think the dimensions make it too wide to fit inside my roof bars, it would overhang over them. I have seen some military foot locker boxes that are lockable and waterproof that will fit inside my roof bars. Down side is that they are heavy even when empty and I don't know if the awning will fold down enough to fit inside. The awning frame bars can be laid on the lid and strapped over though. Even if the owning won't fit in, my tools and spares will, so it will definatly be useful.

Cheers
