Is it diesel or petrol?
early or late
you need ground, ignition 12v, a feed from the sidelights for back lighting and a feed from the coil on petrol and alternator on diesel

Not sure if tge early van has the rev counter feed to dash, have a look under tge dash as the 14 pin plug, should be able to see it without taking anything apart, is there a green wire?

I fitted a rev counter recently. From my investigations, I believe your van won't have a core from the coil pre-wired up the instruments area so you will have to pull one in yourself. Rev counter was really useful on last week's trip to Scotland, big ups and downs and good to know how hard I was working the engine. Bri

I fitted a cheap rev counter to my '91 SA Microbus 2.5 in July. It's a 52mm dia R-Spec one from eBay UK, £35 including a separate housing for it. It works very well except the illumination is rubbish, can't read it easily at night. It needs four wires. 1. Power supply (switched via the ignition).
2. Power supply for illumination (switched via the dash light circuit). 3. Earth wire to any convenient chassis point. 4. Trigger pulse wire from the ignition coil. On my bus and many others (petrol engines only) this is already in place, it's a green wire running to the multi-connector under the dash. If you have a green wire on your ignition coil negative terminal check it for continuity to the multi-connector and 'Tee' into it under the dash leaving it still connected into the dash wiring. If not, as others have said you'll have to run one in.
