2 Pak or Base coat and Lacquer ??

Post by debstee25 »

Hi,

I need to make a decision and I am getting that much conflicting advice I need help. Is this choice just down to preference or is there a reason why you would pick one over the other ?

They're different things.

Two-pack is a type of paint chemistry. There's the paint, and a hardener - kinda like araldite. Mix them together, spray them, the paint sets.

Base-plus-clearcoat is a way of spraying and protecting paint. On top of the primer goes the colour, then a clearcoat lacquer to protect and "deepen" it. Almost all metallics need a clearcoat to protect the surface of the paint.

good quality 2 pack ,ask your paintshop what they use as they are all a bit different to apply and vary a lot in cost and then post back here, oh and do we get any picks of the van

The type of paint probably depends on the bodyshop who are painting the van. Two-pack is probably the default. If you find a classic car bodyshop, they may still use cellulose. A modern-car-insurance type bodyshop might well use water-based paint, which is what's on almost every car from the last decade or so.

Whether it's clearcoat or not depends on the colour, and is separate from what type of paint it is.

Base coat and Laquer will be more expensive but will give a deeper, longer lasting shine and would be better for blending in any future repairs

For an old van with less than perfect metalwork I would suggest a good quality commercial vehicle 2 pack paint, it's cheap, hides well and sets shiney...ideal for most vans.

Personally would have chosen base and clearcoat,,,,, this way most scratches can be wet flatted and buffed out ,, unless deep enough to scratch deeperinto base primer or metal
