Waterpump issues

Post by buzzeditor »

I've got a T25 with the 1.9 turbodiesel AAZ conversion, and I noticed a few drops of water under the back end tonight.

So I got underneath and noticed a small, but consistent leak from the water pump. Is it fixable or will I need to fit a new pump?

If so, where's the best place to get one and is it a big job?

New pump I reckon, seems to be leaking through the bearing packing, this usually gets worse before total failure which is usually sudden. Bearing may be rusting looking at water stain so probably rough and noisy too.

Although it says out of stock it's worth an email (Simon prefers email to phone) plus the info might help sourcing one from other outlets.

Got a new water pump and housing for my T25 (it's got a 1.9 turbodiesel AAZ engine fitted), and noticed that the new water pump didn't have a thermostat. Anyway, I fitted the water pump without the thermostat and it's leaking water from where the plastic housing bolts on to cover the thermostat. So I guess I'd better take the old thermostat and fit it in the new water pump?
However, how do you get the old thermostat out without damaging it - seems to be stuck in pretty tight.

Checked the thermostat, after I removed it and it works fine. However, the seal is still leaking.

Should there be an O ring that goes in here?

Yes reckon so.. but the whole installation looks odd on the cooling side of things? And heavily corroded Was it a lash up when you bought it?

I fitted the O ring and some Hermatite and it not leaking now.

However, the white reservoir behind the number plate - seems to be always empty.

I've only done around five runs in it, but at the end of a ten mile journey - I have to fill up the reservoir.

It's not leaking water and there's not water getting into the oil (the headgasket seems fine).

I drained out the radiator as well and I wondering if it's airlocks and air bubbles that are being displaced slowly?

The reservoir on top of the engine seems to be full.

Any advice anyone? Perhaps I just need to drive it more and keep topping up until all the airlocks are displaced?

If you have no obvious leaks, then yes, that is what I would (and have in the past) done. It can take quite a while for it to settle down (I have found).

Are you bleeding it from top of radiator at front of vehicle?

Should settle down within a few runouts. Stop afterc10 mins and leave running and catefully check for air at top rad bleed point

No, I haven't bled the top of the radiator.

I took out the heat switch at the bottom to drain it - and that's it.

I couldn't see any pipe / outlet at the top of the radiator.

Where would it be and what does it look like?

(Thanks for all your help, by the way...).

On mine its on the rhs (driverside) at the top, a hex headed screw I think either 10 or 13mm, forgotten.

Only place you can bleed from I would have thought???
