I also like the 1.8T petrol, nice engine, very tunable, and i think Mazz now sells the engine carrier bars for them..

Well said.

I considered all the options. After 35k kilometres with a 1.9 Tdi I really think it's the best option for economy, reliability and power.

Re: ultimate engine
If I were to have it done again I would definitely be considering the 1.9 tdi PD.

What are the pros and cons of old Tdi against PD?

Re: ultimate engine
The jx parts that make the instal simpler don't fit, a lot more custom fabricating required.

Re: ultimate engine
If you are going down the Subaru route you might as well do it properly, the 1.6 may not be the best option.
Get the diesel bits and Stick a AGG or ADY 2.0 lt in, you won't regret it.
I love mine.

Re: ultimate engine
I enquired about the Tdi & PD conversions a few weeks ago, the newer PD engine will cost about an extra £1k over the older Tdi and I was told that the PD will give a newer feel.
I own a 1.9Tdi (105bhp) Touran & a 2.0 Tdi PD (140 bhp) Golf. The Golf is still tractor like in noise but pulls like train throughout the rev range whereas the Touran has a narrower power band. It is not particularly easy to compare the 2 because one is heavy and low powered and the other lighter with more power. The PD has a reputation for head problems but mine is OK at almost 10yrs old with over 200k on it.
It will take a lot of miles to recoup the £4.5 to £5.5k (possibly more if you have a charge cooler installed) of a diesel over petrol.

Re: ultimate engine
Gearbox - I think I read somewhere that the 2.1 gearbox ratios might be ok for a Tdi/PD conversion however you ought to check this out before going ahead.
