The van had an Elite replacement engine in it before I bought it a few years ago, is it possible that the pulley can be out back on upside down? More to the point, how has the engine been timed-up??

Crankshaft pully is on upside down?
I thought I'd check my ignition timing, only to find that the marks on the pulley are 180 degrees out

Re: Crankshaft pully is on upside down!
Mine is 180 out
It's no big deal.
Been like that for 4 years.
The distributor has been replaced wrongly that's all
The pulley is on a key

Thanks Kev, what's the best way to check/adjust the timing please?

Got a picture of your distributor from above?
No1 will be in a different place now.
Did you put the light on No1 at the plug?

Has something moved the timing?
Once set it never moves.

Re: Crankshaft pully is on upside down!
I can take a picture of it easily enough. I take it you mean that the rotor will be pointing at no4 instead of no 1, as its currently configured?
I put the timing lead on the first lead facing you on the right, when facing the back of the van.
The timings never been touched since I've owned it, but I just wanted to check it as part of service/check-over.
If I were to try to get it all correctly set-up, i.e not upside down,do you mean that I can set the engine pulley at its correct tdc marks, then remove the distributor and set the rotor to point at no.1, refit it, check/adjust as necessary? That seems the logical way to me,and I'm happy enough to do this but...
[going to bed now, knackered, been working v.early today..] I'll check back tomorrow
Many thanks, Kev

That'll be number two cylinder. Number one is the furthest forward on the right (the front of the engine is the flywheel end).New Kentish Campers wrote: I put the timing lead on the first lead facing you on the right, when facing the back of the van.

Does anyone know how best to check the engine timing if the pulley is upside down please? Many thanks...

Re: Crankshaft pully is on upside down!
By taking your strobe signal from the cylinder which is at TDC on the firing phase when the timing marks are aligned. Easy enough on a four cylinder engine.

Re: Crankshaft pully is on upside down!
Ah, nice one, thank you
I had this horrible vision that I needed to remove the distributor and put the rotor back to front or something so that it would then match up so that it too be 'upside down', if you get what I mean...
I will do this tomorrow, thanks again!!
Doug.

Re: Crankshaft pully is on upside down!
That would just bug me...I would just have to move the distributer 180 degrees and reposition the plug leads.

Re: Crankshaft pully is on upside down!
I dont really mind what I do,Martin. I just wanted to be able to check the timing to make sure all is correct as it's the only thing I've not done as yet on the engine, service wise.
Many thanks!
Doug.
