Brake Drum Paint

I'm about to replace the brake shoes and drums on my bus.
The finish on the new drums does not look very robust and I suspect it will be rusty in no time at all.
So I am thinking about painting drums silver or matt black - has anybody got a good paint recommendation.

I've heard that the new Hammerite is "pooh".

Avoid the VHT spray cans as they go rusty in 6 Months.

I have no chance of getting the Eastwood paint over here.
I'll go the engine paint route.

You could try stove paint its normally black used for painting barbacue equipment & wood stove burners.I used it on an exhaust silencer it didnt rust and lasted.So brake drums would be a good choice .Obtained from hardware iron mongery stores.Its listed on ebay various manufacturers . http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rust-Oleum-St ... 1866wt_958

I just used smooth hammerite years ago. It has stayed on fine.

I would go the hammerite route or similar 'One Coat' type without the need to undercoat ie: stuff for iron gates/fencing rails.

In the past I've used smooth hammerite to good effect but I've heard that they have changed the formulation and it no longer covers like it use to.

Must admit...I used Wilko's own brand equivelent gloss black and it has been fine (used it to paint a new petrol tank before spraying it with stone gaurd rubberized under body stuff)

Hammerite is a 'Brand' Irish company I think, there will be other paint manufacturers doing similar products (not perhaps in the same range of colours and finishers)
Radiator paint is similar....not sure you will find it in black though.

Radiator paint - now that's a good idea. I know that I can get that in silver.

You need black paint not silver you want to get rid of the heat not reflect it back in.

No I want silver paint black to me looks naff and I couldn't give hoot about the heat.
They don't hot enough with my driving style.

agreed, the colour of the paint finish on a brake drum on iour vans is irrelevant from a heat loss point of view, and silver looks nicer than stealth blick
