i am still around but havent had a phone or internet at home and the workshop. in october i was promised the world of telecoms and greatest service in the land by a company called UNICOM based in manchester. within a few days all was not as promised and then i was called to confirm the payment amounts about 3 weeks later... it had gone up and i told the girl if its that amount then cancel it right now! called BT back and they gave me a better rate than before but i'd get £70 reconnection fee. over the next few weeks the phone calls from unicom and letters of court action and a big percentage of the 3 years contract total amount for both lines as a termination fee to an AGREED VERBALLY binding contract i have no way of gettingout of..... in the printed confirmation of contract which was 21 days after i had first call from them,the second page was crammed full of small print. if you want to cancel before the contract starts you have to do it before 10 days... it was 11 days before i even had a line in from them and there was no way i couldve known the service was bad before the 10 days. the credit control team said i agreed verbally as the full terms and cons mustve been read to me over the phone before i accepted contract. i asked if he had heard the salesman read all of these terms to which i have agreed? no it wouldve been a recording for 10 mins or so they played to me! well check again and you will hear me interupting the guy after a few sentences when i asked how long this would take? you have to listen to all of them for about 10 -15 mins he says. to which i said if i have to listen to this "pooh" then you arent getting my business and just cancel everything and i hung up. over the next few days all the letters came in promising the world now i have joined UNICOM. so as it stands they held my line and business and home numbers,blocked all calls, called me up to give me all sorts of abuse to which i asked the credit manager how good he felt as the company representative who not only gets paid to make customers irrate to the point of threats of physical violence and verbal abuse exchanged, but what must your bosses above you think of you to be be threatened during any exchanges with the public? it it was BT or a bank the police would be at my door in no time!
so i have just got new lines from BT and UNICOM are looking for £1695 charges plus daily interest then baillif charges and we always take non payers to court and i will be credit blacklisted. i just asked for his name,he asked why? well i have your address of work,its only 250 miles away and i am being charged to have my life/day wasted all that SAFE distance away? are you threatening me? i am telling you i will sit outside your work and just hit any one of you as and when i feel like it? hung up, then loads of calls of abuse and we wil;l make you pay cos we have a contract over you that you cant get out of! so if anyone works for united utilities, UNICOM, at universal house, longley lane Manchester M22 4SY or have friends working there? i will definately be paying the offices a personal visit in the very near future.

i am meeting with the engineering place later in the week to place next order and a few changes here and there,then i should get a production timescale over the following week or so,then i will let the folks know whats available and when, cheers mcgill

Came across the following explanation which may help your dilemma;

If you are in the UK, generally, there are no formal requirements which have to be satisfied to create a binding contract. There are exceptions however, which include contracts for the sale of land and consumer credit agreements. Consequently, a verbal contract will be binding.

As you may already of guessed, the problem with oral contracts is proving exactly what was said and agreed. Generally, it can be one person's word against another's. However, if you can prove that you were given a false assurance and/or information on which you based your decision to enter into the contract, you may have an action for misrepresentation and/or breach of contract which would entitle you to damages.

Also from a consumer point of view, contracts made purely at a distance, over the telephone, for example, may be cancellable under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000. It does depend on what was the subject matter of the particular contract. If the regulations apply, a buyer has a cancellation period of at least seven days but it may be longer - for example, if documentation wasn't sent or was delayed.

Good luck and don't let the bastards get you down!!

I reckon your time would be better spent on the phone to your solicitors.
