Yes, Maybe its running very near the detonation threshold or you have it right up against the adv. curve, being std. and low comp shouldn't need it, as high octane releases no more energy. Any local cyl overheating (aircooleds very prone of course) would also make it profitable to keep the anti-detonation properties of the fuel up.
e.g the exhaust seats can run v.hot

both engines are running stock ignition settings , even on a roads and around town the bigger engine is a vast improvement on fuel consumption over the stock cu motor due to not needing to use all the gears when pulling away
