Fuel consumption
OK, I am new to all this! Have inherited a T25 2lt air cooled van. It is right hand drive, petrol, 1981 - and have fallen in love with it! However - and this is a big however - it appears to be doing about 11mpg (albeit in an urban area). Now while I am no expert even I know that this is not great fuel ecconomy. I have spoken to a number of mechanics and all bar one says this is not right and should be doing late teens (urban) and early twenties (long distance) The mechanic that says this is normal though is a long standing VW mechanic. Even the original technical spec says it it not right!

Re: Fuel consumption
No way. Even when you carb is not perfect you should be getting 18+ over shor distances.

Re: Fuel consumption
In three years of driving an air-cooled CU engined van I've averaged about 19 mpg over 13000 miles. Around town the van does about 16-17mpg. On a run around Wales last year it turned in low to mid 20 mpg on seven consecutive fills. LPG is the way to go. I'm planning on getting it done as soon as money allows.
2ltr Aircooled CU with twin Solex's & originally a 009 dizzie, but now back to standard.

Re: Fuel consumption
hi, ive been asking about fuel consumtion, and according to the t25 owners manual, at 56mph- 4 speed box, you should get 26.9 mpg, now that wouldn't be loaded for a weeks camping ect, so my 26mpg ona recent hol to wales isn't tooo bad

Re: Fuel consumption
Recently on a very steady 50mph drive along an A road I estimate that I was actually getting 28-30 mpg. I was stunned. Can that be possible? However it was the A12 which is a fairly flat road with not many roundabouts or traffic lights and | am very gentle on the throttle. Normall on a run I get about 24 mpg.

Re: Fuel consumption
I did a scientific test.
I filled the tank with 4.5 L of petrol, set off down the A38 found a long flat section no bends and a slight tail wind.
flicked it on to petrol at a steady 55.
Not moving my foot, or braking ...the fuel lasted for 31 miles before spluttering out and back to LPG

Re: Fuel consumption
i concur with the rev. i have trundled the path to better fuel economy, leading to a few more journeys for that precious 20 quid of black gold. yes! i have finally figured out the problem of my drastic fuel consumption. and that is, my friends:

Re: Fuel consumption
fisr things ,
make sure someone who knows what they are doing is looking / working with your van - it seems a average mechanic will admit a t25 will baffle them , why this is i have no clue!
next a good service!
make sure all is good then check all the hoses , pipes/ joints ect are good without leaks.
hopefully you are not driving at 99mph ! pulling off at junctions is a much calmer pace than the rest of the traffic- i find that if you keep up with other vehicles at traffic lights ect i seem to be thrashing the van!

Re: Fuel consumption
Bily's right .
in the pierburg is an accelerator pump.
if you ever watched this chucking buckets of neat fuel down the throat...you'd never stamp on the pedal again.
Same goes for the second "choke" or secondary veturi, if this opens (under heavy acc. or high vacuum) ...you dramatically increase the fuel/air mix into the manifold.
gently does it, and feck the traffic, they're playing follow the volkswagen
