HELP! Wheel bearing thread stripped

I have just had a garage tell me that my bus is up on their ramp with a stripped front offside wheel bearing nut. Apparently they tried to tighten it and found the thread stripped. Basically, it needs a new hub/stub axle assembly.

Has anyone got any ideas where I can obtain one in the next 24 hrs? The part is needed in Bristol.

I doubt that very much
the nut only has to be finger tight.

the stub axle has a half inch lead on it with no thread

Sadly not! The stripped thread is actually the one on the stub-axle that that nut screws onto. I think the garage managed to find a secondhand one today. I don't know how the blasted thing got stripped in the first place seeing as it's not been off for 10 years, but will have to put that one down to experience.

Me neither they are on finger tight any tighter and the bearing collapses in a short time.

The nut is peened (hammered) on to the stub axle to lock it in place. If it has been removed without either removing the peened area or straightening it it will damage the thread on the stub axle. I should think most garages whiz it off with an air gun and then inspect the carnage afterwards. There was a thread a while back 'discussing' how much stub axle damage was acceptable.

There is no way that peening the nut impinges upon the integrity of the thread - it only acts on the portion of the axle that is unthreaded.viz:

If you had worked in a machine shop making the that type of things you would understand that it is just as easy to run the thread all the way through in one motion rather than to stop half way through and possibly have a burr at the end of the thread. They could even be machined back to back and then parted off.
You could unpeen it but the axle is tougher than the softer outer portion of the nut and it will normally bend back allowing removal with a good yank (if there is such a thing as a good Yank! ) so long as the peening has not virtually welded the two together. As you can see on the one that I took off which was an original one the peening was not carried out with a 15 lb lump hammer! I did not remove any peening to remove the nut. It would have been slightly deeper than the slight indentation that you can see at the top.

make shure you have the correct stub axle as on the early models up to 1983 there are 2 variations what use different sized wheel bearings

I have seen them done several times rather than replaced but there you go. Any ideas how these stub axles threads can get damaged? cross thread?

I don't believe it gets damaged, folks mistake the non threaded lead on the axle for stripped thread

Well, with the wheel off it's pretty hard to mistake the threaded area from the smooth section. One bit is totally smooth and the other looks like... a thread. I went to the garage and got him to show me where it was slipping and it was on the latter. There's no way of knowing how it got stripped: overtightened, cross-threaded, incorrectly unpeened etc. It may be that the garage screwed things up (or not, in this case) but they are a pretty tidy independent VAG outfit. There's frig-all I can do about it in any case. They aren't going to admit to anything are they? It might have happened years ago for all I know and I've been driving around with the wheel about to wing off. Whatever. I just need to throw money at the problem and get it fixed now.
