Hi guys I am here again in need of some help..... I brought a 1980 cu T25 19 months ago for me and my bride to be to use on our wedding day, and for use for our Honeymoon, we have made many trips in our van and its been 100% reliable up to now, I decided as we where using it alot i needed to spend some money on it and I had all the carbs refurbed, a new starter motor, new brakes, full srvice etc etc , and its been a truly amazing little van we have had loads of fun in it and its ran A1!! However on saturday one of the tappetts started to rattle whilst i was driving it, i pulled over straight away to check the oil level witch was a little low so i topped him up, but it didnt clear so i took it into my usual mechanic and he said to flush the engine, change the oil and filter and it should clear, we have done this but it still seems to be rattling.... He has told me not to worry about it and just go with it and it will probably clear... however I am now getting married this saturday, and then supposed to be driving down to parris in the camper on sunday!!!!! Up untill now I have had 100% confidence in "wilson" and no doubt at all that he would get me any where I needed to go however this has put the fear of god into me as I have never been abroad in a van before...... I have 1 mechanic telling me Its ok and another telling me its scrap !!! the oil pressure light doesnt come on and it doesnt do anything its not supposed to appart from this one tappit that has started to rattle, can anyone help me or give me some advice on what they think i should do..... do I just go for it and hope for the best or do i call the whole thing off and take my car and a tent....... i would apreciate advice either on here or via phone on 07527 338153.... thanks very much
I want to help, but your mass post was doing me head in, so I broke it down to sentences. No offense.

For starters, does your oil light come on with the ignition?
What oil have you in your engine?
What engine is it?
When was the last time you replaced the oil, and oil filter?

Hi,
I'm interested as well, my 1900 water cooled from 83 does a similar thing. Mine always clears after 20 minutes or so, but makes a big racket till it does.
I was told it wasnt the end of the world and to engine flush a couple of times getting the engine hot each time. I'll get around to that soon.
Just for info its the same advice for Scirocco and Golf with hydraulic cam followers, its easier to change them if it doesnt work though.............
Pop the rockers off and see if a tappet screw has not come loose.... Is it doing it from cold or just when it has warmed up ?
Mine has started doing this since I have rebuilt the top end of my engine (Heads)...and mine are brand new followers..
Im just gonna live with it..Im off to Fort William in scotland in July/August.. Fingers Crossed.
The only other solution would be to use 20/50 oil..It would not hurt as its going to warm up soon and the CU engines like the oil a little thicker in the summer.

Life is not a rehearsal...Live life to the max....Buy a Aircooled VW and get covered in Rust and Oil.......But we all love it really....!!
Mine rattles like Billy's if I haven't used it for a week or so. Clears after 20 mins or so. Has always done it for the last ten years. I just got used to it. Although I suppose it shouldn't really
What's key about hydraulic lifters is that they are self-adjusting AFTER they have been set properly. If not correctly adjusted you will either a) break the plunger inside the lifter b) pound a valve seat c) burn a valve that's left open by the lifter, etc. How long this will take is not predictable. Ratwell writes...
If you only adjust them by 0.5 turns the lifter won't compress enough and you'll upset the rocker geometry accelerating valve train wear. In practice what happens when you don't preload the lifter enough is it will take too much time to pressurize and you won't get enough valve lift. This will cause the engine to labor and sound noisy. The noise is often heard coming from the camshaft (center of the engine).
and further..
Two turns of the 10mm valve adjusting screw with 1mm threads will preload the lifter ~1.5mm (remember the 1:1.3 rocker ratio). This is about half the distance that the piston inside the lifter can travel. If you use too little preload you will stress the lock ring that holds the lifter together when the lifter socket makes contact with it. If you use too much preload, the plunger may bottom out at first, then as the lifter pumps up to compensate the valve may not close properly and compression, performance and valve life will suffer.
hi there,
thanks for all your replies, it seems to be doing it all the time just randomy started the other day, now it wont stop i will take it out in the morning and give it a long hard blast up the duel carridgway i guess this will either make it betyter or worse.... If I wasnt driving to france on sunday i wouldnt be so bothered!! it used to some times rattle if it was cold and hadnt been used for a while but would always clear after 5 mins or so... oh well in for a penny in for a pound i suppose
