Has anyone fitted a JustKampers Dash Tidy please?

Post by Bramsley »

Hi there,

I've just bought a Dash Tidy for my LH drive T25, and wishing now I had looked at these forums as they don't seem to be highly rated. :(

That said, Its just arrived, so I may as well try and fit it. The instructions aren't brilliant and I was a bit surprised to see that the 'fittings' are just 4 screws. so I have a few questions please for anyone who may have fitted one:
1. Should the screws go through both parts of the tidy (ie top and bottom) or do they just go through the bottom part, with the top being clipped on afterwards?
2. Will the screws by themselves stay tight, or should they be secured by a nut or something inside the dashboard?
3. Once fitted, is the dash tidy stable enough to carry drinks whilst in motion? (I have visions of the screws coming loose over a bump and the drinks going everywhere. Perhasp the tidy would be better glued on - any suggestions for something that won't ruin the dash?)

I'd really appreciate some feedback from anyone who's ever fitted or used one of these.
Many thanks,
Sharon,
Sharon

Hi Sharon, Im not that familiar with the JK dash tidy, but if its the one I have read about, its the flimsy type? If so, I have read on here, and other forums that it's best to secure it to your dash(non padded) by means of double sided velco pads instead of drilling holes in your metal dash and using self tappers.

I have also read that some members, maybe over on The Samba having to reinforce their dash tidies with ply wood braces.

I'm sure someone will be along soon who has first hand experience on the JK dash tidies, as I'm only going by what I have read Sharon.

Hi Mickeyfin.

Thanks for your reply. Its not the most robust item, but I wouldn't call it flimsy - once the two parts are clipped together they seem fairly rigid, but wouldn't stand a hard knock I suppose. There are holes in the dash already where a previous owner has screwed in 3 unknown fittings, so a few more won't make much difference if I have to, but I'll look out for the double sided velco (velcro?) pads as I think screws might need some additional support anyway.

It would be great to hear from someone who has first hand experience of fitting one of these, but I really appreciate your reply. Thank you.

Hi Sharon.

I have a dash tidy in mine, was already there when I bought it, so can be sure if it's a JK but mine looks like this http://www.justkampers.com/shop/2-piece ... 13123.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

1. The screws are only through the base part, with another set of (plastic) screws to attach the top
2. The self tappers have stayed put, the slight spring in the plastic acts like a form of spring washer. Mine hasn't moved yet.
3. Personally, I wouldn't trust mine to hold a drink, I don't think the design will hold it securely enough.

There's also screws in mine from some previous accessory, so this hides them quite nicely :D

Cheers
Chris

Hi b-f-c.

Yes that's the same as mine, but it didn't come with any plastic screws, the top just slots onto the bottom like a box lid, nothing to fasten it there :( .

I am worried about drilling holes in the dash though, in case I damage something inside it, so I'm coming to the conclusion that a strong double sided tape might be the best way to go for me. I can secure the bottom to the dashboard, and then use the tape to secure the top and bottom halves of the tidy together.

Thank you all for your help and advice. This is a great forum. :D

I don't think there's a great deal behind the dash, at least there isn't behind mine.

How about using adhesive velcro tape, so you can remove it if need be, or mirror pads.

Double sided tape option might not be flexible or thick enough to make it mate the surfaces properly.

We have one. Just the base is held in place with two self tapping screws (with largish washers to spread the load a bit) and then the top fits over it and stays firmly in place. In order to make sure that you are not going to hit anything you just need to pull out the head unit from your stereo. I wouldn't personally rely on velcro or double sided tape. Ours hasn't ever moved and we carry drinks on it quite often. I know a lot of people don't like them because they encourage you to carry too much rubbish on the dash. On the other hand it can be really useful for bits and bobs that you need on a long journey. We have to remember to empty it when we go off roading otherwise it would soon empty itself. I would put a couple of pics up but I'm having a problem with photobucket at the moment... :evil:

Are there any other brands of the dash tidy then, or just the JK version?

Thank you all for your replies. I'm re-assured to know that there's not much under the dash, and that the tidy itself seems to do the job. I'm still a bit nervous about drilling into the dash though :shock: , but I'll have a look to see if there is anything obvious (like the stereo) near where the screws would go, and maybe use velcro pads as well for extra security.

Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to reply. I'll be fitting the tidy at the week end and will let you know how I get on.

@ B A Eauty - I only know of the JK one commercially, but some people on these forums have made their own - see this conversation - https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... y#p7742920" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
