Pierburg 2E3 mixture screw?

Post by richlaz »

Hello all,

Been having a couple of problems with my 1.9 watercooled (DG i believe)

It's been sounding a little rough when idling, and a strong smell of petrol...

I've taken the plugs out for a clean, they were very sooty. I believe the fuel mixture to be not quite right.

I don't know a lot about these engines. It has a Pierburg carb (i think its a 2E3). Does anyone know where the mixture screw can be found? (pic/diagram would be good too  ) Took the top cover off for a quick look but doesn't look too obvious to me?

Thanks for any help :D

Here be DRAGONS so beware before proceeding

on the right side of the carb..a small screw... usually with a tamperproof cap
this should only be adjusted with a gas analyser.... as it affects the CO output when the van is MOT'd
you can have the gas analysed any time and make the adjustments at the same time at the testing station
CO reading should be no more than 2.5% any more and it would be running too rich

rough setting is max 2.5 turns out... the setting depends on the fact you have an air tight system and the choke mechanism is working properly and the timing is spot on

REMEMBER this controls the mixture at all speeds, if you lean it out too much you risk overheating the engine.

 I'll do a lot of reading up and research before/if I decide to have a play :P

The MOT is due in about 3 months, so I may just put up with it for now, and ask them to take a look while it's in the garage :) That's probably my best bet... otherwise the engine will probably never run again
