Bleeding Power Steering system

Just fitted the engine back in our 1989 T25 Westfalia California LHD 1.6td

We understand that the power steering system should be self bleeding. Unfortunately when we start up the engine the system produces lots of air which vents, together with the fluid, out of the top of the reservoir.

Is it a new pump or are we missing something

They are not self bleeding you have to jack up the front and rapidly spin the steering wheel from lock to lock a few time to purge any air in the cylinder, check the fluid level then start the engine and wait till bubbles stop flowing when the steering is slowly rotated from lock to lock then recheck the fluid level.
