AAZ Not idling...

Post by Iceworx »

Morning All,

I've got the AAZ in now, and starting just about..but wont idle.

If I give the symptoms i was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to fix it..

It starts up with a it of effort. but throws out a lot of smoke. Grey ish in colour.

The throttle arm is off at the moment, so turning it with a 10mm spanner.

the engine doesn't idle, it coughs and misses, and cuts out unless i wind the revs up, once its about about 1500rpm it doesn't smoke and revs as I would expect.

The throttle travel seems tiny though, literally a few millimetres between full throttle and its dropping low enough to cut out.

I've filmed a bit of footage of it running on the phone, and i'll try and upload it to youtube tomorrow.

The engine has stood for about 2 years before being fitted, as far as I know the pump did have some residual diesel in it.

Any suggestions as to what may be causing this?

Cheers guys

Pump timing Ringo?

Surely if it was out it wouldn't run so well at higher revs?

Did you see it running before you bought it? Have you changed the timing belt? If you have then you may be a tooth out with the belt which could cause it to have idle problems. I seem to recall from the brickworks fitting kit instructions, that the actual throttle lever position makes a difference so it may be that not having the lever on is also contributing?

My AAZ smoked a fair bit when I first started it but it soon cleared once it had been run for 5 mins or so.

when i removed my throttle lever the splined shaft seemed to drop down a little ..this might be the problem, also if the splined shaft isnt in the right place it causes all sorts of problems with idle and revving..try it with the throttle lever in place :ok

Sadly I didn't see it running before I bought it, but i've had everything apart, new rings, new glow plugs, water pump, oil pump etc etc..

The throttle lever could well be the source of the problem, i'll have another look at this and see if I can correct the mistake.

Thanks
