Hi, um yes...lots of split rubbers...oil pump rubber leak, main seal leak, gearbox sump rubber leak, gearbox dif box sump rubber leak,
oil pressure switch leak, oil pump leak, rocker cover rubber leak, oil cooler o ring leak, and all the hoses need replacing too...i think the van cutting out may be an overheating issue due to a problem pressurising the cooling system, also the over-revving may be the throttle cable sticking or an aging throttle valve...I think the main issue here is with a van that hasnt been properly cared for, where you guys draw the line...i'm at least encouraged by your collective optimism that these problems can be easily remedied even if i do need a recon engine...so i'm going to try some other garages recommended on this forum...thanks again for your comment...

There's no rubber in your oil pump.

main seal leak,

The only 'main seals' are the waterjacket seals between the jackets and the heads or perhaps the crankshaft oil seals (VERY cheap to buy).

Is this B.S. what the 'garage' told you ?

There are no 'rubbers' in the gearbox to leak ... only seals which are easy to replace ... the input shaft seal and the 2 drive flange seals. Oil pressure switches often fail and are cheap and easily available, the oil pump is easily swapped with the exhaust silencer off, rocker covers are literally pence, oil cooler seals are cheap, ALL the hoses ? Nah, never seen that EVER, seen plenty with a couple or 3 at most but many are easily available.

You need a proper T25 mechanic to look at this van.

Agree with Ian - you need to get someone who knows (and cares) about old VWs to have a look. There is a VW camper specialist in W10 (http://www.jacksgarage.co.uk/contact/index.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) which may be near you (although don't know them myself).

Elite VW (http://www.elitevw.com/products.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) in Basildon will supply and fit a recon engine and collect/deliver. There are also other recon engine suppliers in London including The VW Engine Company (0208 692 3326) in SE8 who will fit a MV 2.1 engine for £1295 - so worth a call.

Sounds like you van is a good one so worth thinking about a recon engine. Best of luck.

engine out 3hrs tops ... 3-4 hours to replace the seals and mounts, pop a new clutch in while we're in there then... pop it back in 3 hrs..

What's his rate.. £400 an hour??..coz the bit's cost squat
he must be good to charge that

Depending on exactly where you are in West London, you could also try VW Airfix near Sutton on 0208 647 3898. Darren knows and cares about old VWs, he owns a 2.1 Automatic Caravelle himself, so he'll be sympathetic.
