Think i will take you up on your offer to come and have a chat and see what you have collected andy, am interested in the feedback from anyone who has done the swap and is happy with the results, any info gleaned now could save time later on. Are you doing the next splitterz meet?

And look for a donor motor of whatever flavour you fancy from a Scirocco or a Passat rather than a Golf.

Only reason is that the breakers etc charge more for the 1.8 injection engines if they are in a Golf

I have a 2l 8v lump from a MK3 ( engine code 2E ) but without any of the wiring harness from the donor car is this going to be a problem? :(
Also there are picture on here showing a GTi conversion, the engine is tilted over to about 50 degrees, is this because thats just the way the holes line up between the engine and the bellhousing or in an attempt to fit the engine but get the engine bay lid back on afterwards?
Thanks
Have a nice day !

I think you'll struggle without the harness, it took me a day to figure out the wiring with a harness. I had a copy of the autodata cdrom too which was most useful. If you use a diesel bellhousing the engine is laid over at about 50 degrees that's the way the bolt holes lineup and as you thought vw did that so that it clears the lid. Don't buy engine from a breakers buy a complete car. I got a complete golf mk2 for a ton

I have been quoted £35 per hour for a reputable local welder / auto restorer to fabricate my exhaust. He recons will take couple of hours, and I can bring parts to keep costs down (Gti downpipe to butcher)

Does this sound reasonable?

Might sound like a strange idea, but, as these motors and parts seem interchangeable, would a 1600 diesel exhaust manifold bolt on, then you get to swear about those bent metal clips to hang the donw pipe on with, , you would then have a simpler single down pipe to work with, just an idea.

thats what it had originally but it strangles the engine as it too restrictive for a gti engine really

Thought I'd add an update here... I got an exhaust blow as you'd expect on a home made exhaust after a couple fo thousand miles of driving it like I stole it.

Soon as it started blowing the engine was a lot smoother cruising at motorway speeds, seems the blow improved the breathing so... the t25 back box got ditched and a search round the scrap bin of a friend's exhaust fitting centre yielded a small resonating box and a stainless dustbin with a funnel on one end. 4 hours of cutting grinding and welding later....

Don't think the neighbours like it very much lol.

I would like to point out its not my fault... while I'm no "Essex Boy" stereotype I am still from Essex so it was impossible to resist the back box.

Breathes a bit better now too :whistle

Sorry to drag this back up but it is finally welding time...

I have been running my Kjet 1.8 Mk2 Engine with the 1.6 d manifold and silencer for a year and now want to free up the extra BHP by letting it breath.

I have the Gti Manifold and will get the welders to fabricate the downpipe but am a bit stuck on what backbox to buy?

I don't want anything stupidly loud, just one that will let my engine breath better with the gti manifold and downpipe.

Also upon getting a different backbox how do I secure it? Do they have same fittings as the T25 diesel ones or will welder have to weld them on?

Thanks

Hi guys
I have a gti engine conversion with a diesel manifold. Will the standard gti manfold fit without having to modify the engine mount? My manifolds burnt out probably down pressure and i still have the disel back bock on which is restricting it.
Thanks.

I was told it was the digifant but not sure is there anyway of telling the difference? ill try and get some pics up soon but i have to warn you it is caked in oil. Once ive sorted the exhaust next job is the gear box as first gear seems to have retired.

One has fuelmpipes leading from top of airbox / intake other does not. I have the kjet. And i think the corrct version of gti manifold does fit but needs downpipe fabricating.
I will get some pics up later of what i intend to make
