VonOettinger '91 Multivan Syncro 3.2 WBX6

Post by VonZu »

I recently purchased a '91 Oettinger Multivan Syncro. I have a few other T25, but haven't bothered making parallel project threads as information about these are quite easy to get by in Norway.
But for this one, I assume I might benefit from a broader approach. My main project thread will be the Norwegian one (I assume), and I will be posting here as I find time to translate.

Info about the car:
'91 Caravelle C Syncro
Multivan/Carat interior
3.2 WBX6 (60.000km since complete overhaul by Skinne Bros)
Gearbox with 0.78 4th gear (20.000km since complete overhaul)
Decoupler
Eperspächer 5kW
Brakes from Audi 200 Turbo
Gas shocks
Fantastic sound
Superb driveability

The car is as close to the perfect T25 as I can get. But still, a good distance from perfect. Several issues have to be corrected, and I will post more about it as I find the time. I hope this project will be of interest, and that the feedback will be helpfull. If I find the time, I would love to go to one of the Syncronaut events with this car. I think I actually own my dream car, but I haven't quite settled on the feeling yet. To my knowledge, this car is the only one of it's kind in Norway. And it seems that it's not exactly plentiful in general.

Pictures will follow. I just have to take them first :D

I love your avatar on the Norwegian Forum! Is it a true likeness?

Looking forward to the pictures of the Oettinger too.

Thanks :D The avatar is true enough that people recognised me on BusCamp 2011 in Norway :D
I'll try to take some pictures of it tonight. A bit annoying that it's dark when I leave for work and dark when I return. But I guess the Oettinger can stand the flash.

Is this the RV-bus with the "non-G gear" / 5-speed converted syncro transmission? I'm sure there would be interest here in what was used to make this drivetrain :)

As far as I know, this is basically a stock syncro gearbox where the 4th gear has been replaced. I have a standard syncro, and the lowest gear on this Oettinger is close to what it is on the standard syncro. So I guess it has a G gear.
What is the "RV-bus"?

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought that your bus was modified/restored around 2005-6 "to order" for someone on vwbus.no as a road-going syncro RV-type concept. This included converting the transmission to eliminate the G-gear and make it 5-speed AWD instead? It had an accident or was damaged soon after the customer took delivery I think? It's so distinctive, it must be your Multivan!
I can't find the topic on vwbus.no but I'm sure it was there recently :?

Ah, yes. The car took a hit around that time. Several of the panels were replaced. Pro job, good result. And yes, I believe it was the plan to make it into a road going SUVish thing. Which it kind of is today. I am very much in agreement with the previous owners thoughts about what this car should be, and I don't think I'll deviate in any major way from his vision. Judging by what he has done so far, we're pretty syncronised (pun intended :P). My other syncro is now free to focus on more off-road qualities :D
I'm not completely up to speed on the history yet. But the only change to the transmission was the replacement of the 4th gear, which was performed at the same time as the overhaul of the gearbox.
The project thread is for the time being gone from vwbus.no. But the previous owner and one of the admins are working on bringing it back. Hope they make it, because there is a whole lot of history there. The previous owner spent hours on hours on the car. Not to mention money on the pro rebuild of the transmission and the engine. If the old project thread shold prove impossible to restore, I'll try to sum up the history by talking to the previous owner and looking through the mountain of documentation I have. The guy likes talking about this car, and seems to have a good memory.

I'm based about 50km south of Stavanger. But I work at Sola, and don't mind taking the Oettinger to work from time to time :)
