We stayed at a hotel on Lake Bohinj when on a trekking holiday a few years back. And yes, there are bears in the woods. But they're not as dangerous as the home made schnapps you can buy in any bar.

Food is wonderfully basic. Cooked fish or meat/meat pies with boiled potatoes and rice making up much of the menu. Beer (pivo?) excellent. Wine home made and cheap. When asked for the wine menu on our first night was instantly given a stone jug of red wine with froth on the top. The waiter said, 'here is wine'. So that's the choice then? Fine with us! Smoked meats, cheeses and pickled mushrooms are superb.
Locals (then) are friendly and return your Dobar dan (good afternoon) with a polite smile and you can roam for miles in total safety...apart from the bears. Just kidding. Lots of dairy cows with jangling bells around necks spread out across hills and countryside too. In all a wonderfully relaxed place and totally litter free. Also it's the perfect place for star gazing due to very little light pollution......and as much as I tried each night never suffered a single hang over. We put this down to the home made wine and schnapps not being stuffed full of nitrates or unhealthy chemicals.
Slovenia has got it right. And I cant wait to return.
