petrol issues

Post by jude8111 »

Sitting here depressed as its Friday 22 nd and i should be at BugJam in my van, alas im home watching Friday night telly

My problems with my Transporter.. its an 84 A plate, 1900 petrol, after spending 3 hours with a mobile mechanic who could not get to the bottom of the problem i am now going to pick some more brains...

Ok, problem, low revs and idle ok, high revs thrashing the a*** off it ok, inbetween this is a "dead" spot (think thats what you would call it) it would appear that the engine gets starves of petrol at this point splutters and just dont run right, was to worried about the 2 hour journey to go any where.

The bloke stripped down the carb, cleaned the jet, replaced some petrol pipes, checked for leaks, he did mention that sometimes the float can get stuck up and therefore not allowing petrol into the carb, however, did not know where and if the carb had a float ( he was refering to Landrover V8s that had this problem )

The petrol pump is new, he checked that the correct voltage was going in,timing etc but after 3 hours gave up

Now, being female i dont understand too much but im learning ( i have owned Beetles for 10 years ) I understood how my Beetle ran and how to fix it, but this to me is a whole new ball game, as i really can not understand what else can be wrong.

Would flushing the engine through with a full tank and some redx work or even help??, the carb looks ok and clean, no leaks just dont know where else to turn or for that matter who else to turn to, so thats where you all step in lol !,

So answers on a post card too.. only joking just pop your thoughts down so i can go to Action and Whitenoise, and actually use my van !!

Cheers all x

Ok
I think this is fuel related so you're in the right ball park.
Let me ask a few questions first.
When it ticks over is it steady engine with no missing AT ALL?
Second, does it hesitate and splutter when you then press the acc pedal?

Hiya no knocking or noise etc on idle exactly what you said it splutters when you put foot down then after a bit clears and runs but does it all the time it seems that you have to drive through the sputter

Right..
I didnt mention noises :D
but your description of the spluttering is one of two things
the first is an air leak on the inlet side.
Either a vacuum hose has detached itself or has perished, the brake servo hose has become leaky, or a gasket on the inlet side has split.

Secondly the transfer jet is blocked, or the accelerator pump diaphragm has become faulty.

Check the operation by someone pressing the accelerator and you looking down the venturi of the carb to see if there's a good squirt of fuel going in.

As for the air leak, any obvious signs should be addressed. .. High CO levels in the exhaust are a good indicator aswell.
