hi all, had a bit of a problem tonight on the way home.

Van was cruising along quite nicely and then it was just as though someone gently pushed the brake pedal, and i lost power for a sec. then it perked back up again! This happened quite a few times and continued all the way back. It would sit at 60mph no probs then just bog down and pick up again after!

It wasn't jerky, just a smooth 'Bog'! I am having a guess at either the Ignition coil, or the amplifier module?? Its got a facet electric fuel pump fitted that sounds as though its working ok, and i can see fuel pumping through the filter. The plugs and leads are not that old, and the air filter is brand new. Also i have changed all the vacuum pipes so i can rule them out.

Apart from that it sounds fine, ticks over nicely and generally runs nice and smooth.

Its a 1981 2.0 Cu and to be honest the coil looks like it's probably the original. I am hoping that's at fault, but was just wondering if anyone else had had similar problems??

I would suggest the fuel pump is the culprit

Is it an electric pump or mechanical?

Well, i forgot to mention that yesterday i fitted a new fuel filter, which (i didnt realise at the time) is smaller than the old one. So today i thought this may be the cause and turned up what i think is the regulator to the facet pump i have fitted. It was on 3, i turned it up to 4 and its a lot better. Only thing is when i get up to just over 60mph in 4th it does the same. Do you think i should turn it up a bit more?? cheers

have a goood look at the filter it might be draggin cak out the tank and blocking the pipe, also worth a try is blow back down the fuel pipe into the tank might be cak in there too

As above, but also if the new filter is smaller than the old one are you confident it has the same flow rate? If it is flowing less fuel, turning up your fuel pump will only compemsate to a degree.

I would just check it is the right filter? or compare to others - look at the ECP web site, chuck in your reg no and see what they list - generally find the German filters are better quality if they list one for your engine

We had a similar problem on long hills in France (didn't happen in England!). When we got back I changed the fuel filter as a first port of call and the problem went away. The old filter looked fine so don't inspect it; replace it.

Oh, it was the inline fuel filter half way along the fuel line from the tank to the engine.
