Just occured to me that GSF part number is for an '89 on model. Mine's an '87. Have looked up GSFs site but they don't list the part for earlier models, but maybe it's an identical part across the board? Have emailed them to check, but if you are sure it would fit then I'll sleep better tonight

Kev, you mention the plastic pipe that goes onto the union nut. It's starting to make sense now as the Haynes manual shows a traditional brake pipe set-up. When I crawled under my van today I noticed that it is, as you describe, a plastic pipe. Does this simply push on onto the nipple of the union nut? Thanks Greg

It does push on but uou wont pull it off.
It has to be undone like a brake pipe

Got the part(from GSF) and fitted it last week, the only hassle was undoing the the bolt (nearest the engine), was awkward getting a spanner in that tight space, fortunately as theres a bit of give in the hoses I was able top squeeze it in. I used new bolts and nuts for the reverse procedure and my 9 year old son did the honours by pressing the clutch pedal whilst I bled it through at the back end. All sorted from start to finish in about 2 hours. What a relief to be able to select gears again!!

that bolt is a bit of a mare but if you read the wiki there's a neat trick for that.... hey-ho never mind

cool to here you got ya clutch sorted out i now how you feel about that suppid bolt i ended up just fitting a capted nut to it just to be on the safe side

I ended up using a slightly longer bolt as a replacement for the 'awkward' one and fitting a spring washer underneath for grip and same above + 2 nuts to minimise the risk of it all coming loose through vibration etc. That way if it has to come off again nothing should be so tight it'll be nigh on impossible to undo as before. I think the captive nut idea makes total sense for both bolts, VW didn't think that one through too well did they ha ha
