Anyone know how much getting head gasket done should cost?

Big lumps of metals and spanners.

Anyone know how much getting head gasket done should cost?

Post by jonzy »

Nooooo!! :( just had report from garage that my overheating problem is a suspected head gasket. They've quoted £450, does that sound about right to anyone, I'm no mechanic by a long long shot but try to get things done myself if i can save a few £ :) but this is way beyond me. Does anyone know that if I've been using the van in this state that it means i might have also cracked the block??
aw hmffff!! I thought it was just the water pump! quick job n ready for the summer!! but....

10 hours rate, probably about right allowing for potential exhaust stud issues, including parts that's probably about right, I'd want a 12 month guarantee though if I was paying for it
I take it they did a sniff test and a leak down test to diagnose the issue ?

AAZ 1.9TD?
Will need the head and block checking with a straight edge and head itself closely examining for cracks etc, possible head skim...you can only quote blind because it's not until it's stripped will you truely know the full extent of the repairs.

Yeh spoke to him again earlier, he gave me a run down on the costs, sounded right.
Not sure what tests they did to get to the conclusion but as you said Martin they said won't be able to tell until they've stripped it down and had a look..... which i've now decided I'm going to do  with the help of a friend who will be over looking what I'm doing from time to time as he's quite busy and would do it for me if he had the time himself.
Not sure what I'm letting myself in for!! Obviously i'm not going to be fixing the problem but just want to find out what the prob is first.
Bit of bugger though as I use the bus daily and have no other transport!
oh well ... into the deep end!!
