V-belt(s) of T3 waterpumps
HELLO! My first question in your forum:
My previous T3 (1,6 D -82) had a w-pump with two v-belts,first running from the crankshaft to the pump,and second belt to the generator. The pump had two pulleys,smaller one in two-parts with adjustment plates between.
When this T3 ran to its end,I found another good one,1,7 D -90. It has only one v-belt running the one-pulley-waterpump and the generator.
So I ask you,is this kind of one-belt-system an original construction,or could it be a modification made by someone previous holder of this T3?
The engine has no other external v-belt operated devices.
As you might know,its easy to modify a two-belt-system to a one-belt-system by taking off the smaller pulley of the pump,and mounting a long belt (about 850 mm) instead,so that it runs around generator pulley,around the inner groove of the crankshaft pulley,and runs the waterpump at the same time,in a shape of triangle.
Unfortunately,this kind of arragement,I guess,makes the pump and the generator spin slower than the manufacturer has originally planned.

Would have been nice if you would have taken the time to introduce yourself, and put in a location and a valid e-mail addy in your sig, like most of the members on here do!!!!-----------

One gets peed off when a Newbie comes on only wants to know info on his T25. Recieves his Technical answer then Knobs off, without sayin thanks.-------------

Hello!
Thanks!
Yes,you´re right.
I forgot my profile but now it´s filled in. The E-mail adress must be somewhere there too.
I live in deep contryside of eastern Finland,in wide Saimaa lake district. I have a VW T25 (T3) Transporter 1,7 D (KY-motor) m.1990,dark blue with windows allaround,and a russian Ural IMZ 650 mc with a sidecar. We Ural/Dnepr owners have a large club,Ural Roikka (http://www.Uralroikka.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.) Visit and see.
I´m not going to disappear after I get any information to my broblem. My knowledge of this T3 model is fair but not perfect,I´m not a specialist. As such an old car,it must of course fix and service myself.
Thanks!

Re: V-belt(s) of T3 waterpumps
I have only seen a 2 belt setup on engines with power steering and I think also with aircon

Re: V-belt(s) of T3 waterpumps
It would be quite hard to make a questionaire of this case,start asking from every T25-owner I see:
"Hello! I beg your pardon,but... how many v-belt wheels do you have in your waterpump?"
Maybe its better to find an old monteur who has fiddled with these T25 engines for two or three decades...

Hi wolverine, i guess your one belt system is normal as my van has the one belt system.
Perhaps VW changed over to the one belt system sometime in the late ninteen eighties
Nice bike!.

Hi Wolverine
I wonder what the weather is like where you are (typical comment from a Britt I guess !)(
I am not very familiar with the Diesel versions of our vans but have not to date seen double belts on them and do not know why they might have been fitted. Single belt is the normal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My mate (years ago) had a Ural 650 - flip = it fell to bits in a year - it went rusty, the carbs leaked, the exhaust blew off, then it wrecked it's pistons. He liked it though
We loved the translation in the owners book
It said something very close to this =
"To start the motorcycle, turn on the fuel by turning on the fuel by the fuel tap to make the tap in the on position therefore making the fuel to be on".
Then the best bit, and I can remember pretty exactly =
To start the engine, kick the motorcycle violently.
If this fails, kick it ever harder 3 more times.
If this fails, return the motorcycle to the manufactures for attention" !!
If I remember rightly, the book also listed implements that could be connected to the drive shaft to use it as a PTO (Power Take Off) such as a corn threshing attachment and a rotary logging saw etc
Sorry I digress (that happens on here) - Yep single belt is normal
Re: V-belt(s) of T3 waterpumps
I think the solution is found in this v-belt case,thanks!
The v-belt question came to my mind after a visit to a spare part shop. I had to get a new waterpump,but only pump with a 30mm center is available today,in this whole land.
My wheel has a 40mm middle hole. So the pump they were offering was a right pump,but I had a wrong wheel.
Fortunately,I found a used 30mm-hole-wheel by net.
I have heard that kind of Ural/Dnepr stories before.
These Ural 650 bikes,even those made in 90´s,are technically from 50´s,so they need plenty of service and care to run forev... oops,I mean: to run from day to day.
They work as well as you use them.
What I feel about my bike could be described by these poetic words: Sometimes a troublemaker,allways a heartbreaker...
Weather´s fine here today,sun is shining and snow is melting more and more,day by day. Lakes are still in ice,but theres some water on the ice already,so the ice will be gone in a month.ghost123uk wrote:Hi Wolverine![]()
Re: V-belt(s) of T3 waterpumps
A correction to my "poetic words": I realized the word "heartbreaker" has a negative attitude in english: breaker of hearts, a traitor. If you translate "heartbreaker" in finnish,it comes "sydäntensärkijä",and it means to us: qonquerer of hearts,breaker of walls of hearts,a charmer.Wolverine wrote:What I feel about my bike could be described by these poetic words: Sometimes a troublemaker,allways a heartbreaker...
So in translation the meaning of this word turns upside down! That snatch of poem should be better as: Sometimes a troublemaker,never a downbraker or Sometimes a downbreaker,never a heartbreaker,or Sometimes a harmer(???),allways a charmer.
Lesson: never try to write poetry in a strange language.
Sorry, I digressed too,... This is not a Poetry Club,so lets go back to VW:s.
Do not worry about digressing on here
Always interesting to compare other languages and the funny things that happen in translation !
Of course many of us here in the UK only speak one language - which is somewhat to our shame
I had fun once, putting some Shakespeare lines into "Babelfish" - translating from English to Greek, then to (perhaps) Russian, then back into English, just to see what came out, the result was VERY funny
I have not got time to play with that now as busy at work, perhaps someone else might try it ? (OK mods, we could start another thread / topic for this ...
