gear stick play

hi people,
ive changed the nylon bits on the gear stick and this has made a big difference but i still have play in the stick, my question is is it hard to change the rear bush and also is there a mid section bush to change? ive looked at the wiki stuff on this but cant determine as to what i need.
Could someone please point out what parts i need and perhaps some tips on changing them would be good.

Hi Mate, How did you get on with the nylon bits? Hard to change? Is the nylon part the bit under the van 1/2 way back? I need to have a look at mine also, just looking for tips.

no mate ive only changed the bit on the end of the gear stick, it wasnt too bad to do and did take a lot of the play out of it.

Replacing the bushes is easy, setting it back up is not. Make sure you mark the position of the front and rear shift rods at the point that they join together. I took my linkage apart yesterday (5 speed) as I was fed up with changing the CD over to the radio when using 2nd gear. Make sure you have got somewhere to degrease things so you can take a proper look. The centre bush is is clamped between two plates placed at the rear of the petrol tank. Although my bush had movement at this point I found that by emerying the rod further down and sliding the bush on to clean area that the movement dissapeared. Worth checking as it could be the rod that is worn. I am now taking the rod to my workplace to see if I can do something about it.

Oh yes the rear bush

Again this is easy to remove but a swine to set up, The rear bush is clamped between two plates that are bolted to a support plate that is in turn bolted to the front of the gearbox. You have to remove the the lever from the gear shift shaft. There is a nut (mine was 13mm) that is probably hidden with grease that you can get to through the aperture of the lever. Again make sure that the lever is horizontal when removing as it is again a splined joint. Makes it easy to line up when replacing. My ball and cup was fine but the bush was very worn. No point ordering parts until you get to look at them first. Most of my costs are down to split gaitors. To get to the bush there is a small pin that needs to be knocked up into the selector lever. The lever can now be slid off. I have not done this yet as I have left it soaking in penetration fluid as it looks a bit solid.

thanks for the reply, ive changed the bit on the gear stick so its only the other bits to do, will i still have to take the gear stick back out to do them?

No you can do it by just disconnecting the two shift rods. You can leave the front one in situ. I managed to remove the lever from the rear shift rod this evening. However it was really seized on and it took a while to sort it. I noticed that the ball lever had a little bit of play in the cup so I squezzed the cup a bit to make it a snug fit

If all linkages are ok and bushes not worn and you want less play try one of these short shift kit they are good

Yes they are the right bits. The rugby ball shaped bush goes in the middle and the doughnut one at the back. Just to say that these are available to buy singularily from Brickwerks and that it may be wise to see what you need before ordering as it could work out cheeper. You may also need to replace rubber boots, plates to retain the bushes or your cup for the ball lever to sit on may be excesively worn.
