Quick Carburettor Question...

Hi was just wondering if it was possible to remove and clean the carb WITHOUT messing up the settings?

Yes it will be on the side... may even have atag on there? but it will certainly have it stamped on the body of the carb!

Not really, I always take the mixture/CO screw out and give it a good blow/clean out. Will need the mixture resetting after.

I'd say yes. I took mine(pierburg) off and cleaned it all up without affecting any of the settings , quiete easy really but messy. And i didnt know what a carburettor was until i bought my van last september.

Might be worth posting what problem your trying to fix first as it may not be the carb...

So did you take out your mixture/CO screw and clean that out? If so Im guessing you didn't reset your CO?

I'd say yes. I took mine(pierburg) off and cleaned it all up without affecting any of the settings , quiete easy really but messy. And i didnt know what a carburettor was until i bought my van last september.

The problem is i've just replaced a dirty (rusty) tank after countless fuel filters and now i've got a very high idle revs. So high that when I killed the ignition the engine kept on running! So I think some of the dirty fuel has got into the carb and its blocking something....

if the engine kept on running after turning the ignition off, you have bigger problems that dirty jets.

The only way you can not mess the setting up when cleaning properly is to mark the adjustment screws and carefully screw them all the way in whilst counting how may rotations to the bottom, them remove them and clean the carb, and then refit them to the same amount to turns , ie screw them all the way in then screw out the correct amount of turns, however you still need to have the mixture ect checked after.

In that case it will need a strip and clean internally, including removing your mixture screw. For the engine to keep running when igintion switched off, sounds like you have more than a carb problem.
Was it running ok before you replaced the tank?

No, left the mixture screw as it was, took off the idle cut off solenoid and sprayed carb cleaner through the in /out holes there to try and cleanout that passage. Cleaned out the float bowl and sprayed carb cleaner through the passages in there too and cleaned the inline filter in the fuel inlet. Just been through an mot and they said the emissions were good. May be that removing the screw might do more good in cleaning the idle circuit though if you can reset it afterwards? I just didnt want to mess with it as had no means of getting it back to original Setting.

It's only not gone off once when I went to the chip shop at night and it went off after i turned the lights off??? the vechile was running fine before except for the fuel leak i had on top of the fuel tank

Your method makes sense about screwing it back in and counting the turns i might try that. Thanks!

Well in that case your going to have to clean the carb out well, do what Steve says and count your turns on any mixture screws you take out. If that fixes it, pop down to see your local MOT tester and ask him if he could check the mixture for you..
