Possible / needed to clean out fuel tank?

Post by bmouthboyo »

Hi,

I bought a camper 2 years ago that needs work and had been sat 5 years prior off road. Now it has a Golf Mk1 K Jet engine in it which I am having problems starting again after getting it running last year.
The metering heads on these K jet engines can be very temperamental and I want to start at the fuel system root and work from their, so the fuel tank.

Now is it possible the inside could be all manky and benefit from a clean? Indeed is it even possible to clean the inside or is it new fuel tank time?

This is the small filter before the pump (their is a proper large one in bay) and as you can see it is grotty!

And this is the colour of the fuel coming out the injectors

Any advice much appreciated

Thanks

When you have something that has been so radically changed it is best to start from the beginning and check the basics are all there in place.
For starters that filter isn't up to the job, infact it may actually starve the system.
Are all the other necessary parts retro fitted ie: electric fuel pump, acumulator, etc:
See this basic K jetronic layout.

Hi Martin,

As far as I am aware everything is present that is needed. It was running last year but after being left for a year again it's not firing up. I have been posting a lot of K jet questions on a Mk2 forum. I think it's the cold start injector and also partly a gammy metering head, hence wanting to know if it's possible to clear out the fuel tank.

It has a pump / accumulator just after that little filter I posted a pic of. In the engine bay next to the metering head is a proper fuel filter for the K Jet engine, so at least its getting filtered.

With regard to the little one I was tempted to remove it but when I looked closely it has lots of crud in it so i thought it must be doing some good stopping that getting to the pump and larger filter. I was going to replace it as it's not on the K jet engines usually.

Do you think I should rid of it? Any suggestion regarding cleaning the tank that's sat with little fuel in for basically 7 years?

Cheers

Youve answered your own question,, get rid of the useless little inline restrictor , there may be muck in the tank but not from standing? fuel does go off for want of a more technical description, personally I would like a filter Pre pump, one that is sufficient for your flow/volume,

ok metal ill tear it out hehe

Any info regarding cleaning a fuel tank out? I am guessing from look of ones on ebay there is no hole large enough to get a hand in and scrub? I just want to start at the tank and work way back, be shame to fix things then more cruddy 7 year old fuel blocks it all up.

Well you have a couple of options, remove tank which is a can or wrigglies. or disconnect the fuel line, drain it and recap, add a gallon or two of fuel then you can poke an airline through the filler to aggitate the fuel and hence any carp thats in there, then remove air, remove cap and drain it out,
personally I would fit a combined water trap and filter
