5 speed gear stick for LHD VW Atlantic

Hello fellow campervan owners. I'm very new to the whole VW campervan game but seem to have hit upon a snag almost straight away after only 1 trip in my VW Atlantic. I bought said Atlantic(1990 T25 Vanagon) about two weeks ago and struggled with the gear shifters from the get-go, trouble getting from 1st to 2nd. On my second trip out the gear stick has sheared off completely in my hand. It looks as though the stick has been welded before in a couple of places and after a bit of digging around it seems to be a common occurence. I don't think I can weld it again as it has snapped right at the bottom near the round 'onion' joint. I've tried ringing round for a second hand replacement but to no avail. Does anyone know of an alternative that would fit a VW Atlantic 1990 5 speed LHD Vanagon???Also any tips for a smoother gear change???Thanks in advance.

Welcome to 80-90.

It sounds like you need to speak with Aiden Talbot - he gets on here and is the muts' with gearbox's - PM him I'm sure he'll point you in the right direction. BTW I had a few "moments" with mine form 1st to 2nd when I first bought it but I'm used to my vans little eccentricities now so no problems (fingers crossed).
